A project work was carried out to reduce irrigation cost and increase water productivity, to increase water conveyance efficiency for rice cultivation and to increase irrigation command area. AWD technology was found cost effective, resource conserving technology to the farmers. About 4-5 number of irrigation could be saved by using AWD technology which also increased water productivity. AWD method was found to be suitable for water and fuel saving technology during dry season (Boro) water scarce period. It saved about 20 to 26% water by which farmers can save about Tk. 2800– 3600/ha fuel cost. In addition, it saved about 36.45 % of electricity cost by using this method. AWD method was applied in the farmer’s field without any yield reduction. This technology is environment friendly through reducing groundwater use in the irrigated ecosystem in the climate change situation.

In Rangpur and Lalmonirhat, Variety BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 was used in boro seaon. In Barisal region, the variety BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan29 and SL8 (Hybrid) was used in aman season. AWD water management technology was followed as research management compared to farmers practice. The fertilizer used in boro season was 262-90-150-112-12 kg/ha of urea-TSP-MOP-gypsum and zinc sulfate. In aman season, fertilizer was used as 195-60-105-68 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum.

Rangpur Region: Average yield of BRRIdhan 28 was 5610 and 5840 kgha-1 for farmer and AWD irrigation practice, respectively at Mithapukur Upazila of Rangpur District.  Average yield was found slightly higher in AWD method than farmer’s practice (FP) but not statistically significant. AWD method also saved about 20 to 26 % of water than FP. At Mithapukur Upazila, on an average 36.45 % of electricity cost could be saved by using AWD method over FP if the water charge payment system is (season wise shallow tube well (STW) fare + unit cost of electrcity use).At Lalmonirhat district, yield of BRRIdhan 28 was observed 4830 and 4980 kgha-1 for farmer and AWD methods, respectively. Similarly, BRRI dhan29 gave 6780 and 7520 kgha-1 for farmer and AWD methods, respectively. Yield was found slightly higher in AWD method when the variety was BRRIdhan 28 but for BRRI dhan29 yield was moderately higher than farmer irrigation practice. On an average Tk. 2807 (24.41 % diesel) can be saved per hectare of land by using AWD method of irrigation over farmer practice if the water charge payment system is (season wise shallow tube well (STW) fare + diesel cost). From the recorded data of two districts it was observed that about 4-5 no. of irrigation can be saved by using AWD technology which is also increased water productivity.In Potuakhali demonstration site, the number of irrigation was 12 in AWD practice and 18 in farmer practice in that area. The number of applied irrigation was same in AWD plots and farmer practiced plots, respectively at Jhalkati demonstration site. About four to six number of irrigation was saved by using AWD method in both sites. About 56.03 liter fuel (diesel) per hectare was saved by AWD practice which is about 3600 Tk per hectare and 29 percent irrigation cost. Farmers got additional yield of 220 Kg, 440 Kg and 234 Kg for BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan29 and SL8 (Hybrid), respectively by using AWD technology. The yields of different varieties used for AWD demonstration in different locations were presented in Table 31. Farmers can be benefited about 6000 – 10000 Tk per hectare based on different varieties by saving irrigation cost and getting extra yield.
