Identification of Location Specific Rice Cultivation Problems and Minimizing Rice Yield Gap Through BRRI Technologies -2012

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to identify location specific rice cultivation problem and to minimize rice yield gap through BRRI technologies. Recommended doses of fertilizer application and recommended cultural practices of rice cultivation could increase rice yield in farmers’ field. It was also observed that higher cost of production of rice was due to high wage rate of labor and irrigation cost. It is high time to go for mechanized agriculture to reduce the production cost, otherwise rice production will be loosing concern rather than benefit. Rice yield gap minimization experiments were under taken during T. Aman’11 and Boro’12 in 3 upazilas of Bogra district, which revealed that BCR was higher in T. Aman season compared to Boro season. This was due to low irrigation and fertilizer costs in T. Aman production. But per hectare rice production was higher in boro season compared to T. aman season. Again, between research management (RM) and farmer management (FM), higher yield was observed under RM plots due to better quality seedlings and fertilizer management. In both aman and boro season, field days were conducted to know the feed back from farmers, local representatives, DAE and NGOs personnel. Positive comments regarding RM plots was made by the participants. Sustainable increased rice production in the near future requires substantial improvement in productivity and efficiency. Researchers should know the farmers’ constraints to high rice productivity and provide them with appropriate technological packages for specific locations to bridge the gap through participatory approaches. The extension services should be strengthen so that farmers use correctly and systematically the recommended technological packages in the crop fields, through effective training and demonstrations.

Methodology:

These experiments were conducted in three seasons with different varieties at different locations which is mentioned bellow.

Experiments were conducted during T. Aman 2011 at farm level in 3 upazilas of Jessore district. BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan51 and BRRI dhan49 were grown in Bagarpara, Chowgasa and Sharsha Upazila, respectively.

Experiments were conducted during T. Aman’ 2011 at farm level in 3 upazilas of Bogra district. BR11, BRRI dhan 46 and BRRI dhan49 were grown in Sonatala, Sariakandi and Sherpur upazila, respectively.

Experiments were conducted during Boro season 2012 with three rice varieties in three upazillas of Lakshmipur district..
