The Effect of Different Quantity of Lime (cao) on the Growth of Tea Seedlings in Nursery at Madabpore T. E.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment on liming at Madabpore T. E. on tea seedling was conducted by five treatments of CaO @ 300,600,900 & 1200 kg/ha which were applied by broadcasting in the tea seedling nursery. The parameter studied were length, diameter and green weight of shoots and length of roots including initial and final soil nutrient status. All the treatments of lime application gave better results than that of control. That means that lime has some positive effect on tea seedlings. Soil p^H value and Ca status also raised slightly.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum dose of CaO to eliminate calcium deficiency in the tea seedlings.

Methodology:

In the nursery of Madabpore Tea Estate beds were prepared (30 m X 1.5 m) and each bed was subdivided into 20 sub plots and each subplots had an area of 123 cm X 92 cm. The nursery beds were designed with proper drains to avoid water logging. A total of 5 treatments such as 0, 300, 600, 900 and 1200 kg CaO/ha was applied as per technical program. The number of replications for each treatment was four and the experiment was carried out following RBD. Lime (CaO; Ca = 70.1 %) was powdered properly and mixed with the soil. The seeds used in this experiment was of almost uniform size. The germination test was carried out in clean sand' beds and the seeds were moist. The creaking of seed coat hastens germination. The seeds were placed at a depth of about 1.25 cm and with spacing of about 2.5 cm between seeds. As soon as the pedicle become ready to emerge from the shell, the seeds were transferred to nursery bed. The seeds were put in a triangular pattern at about 3 cm beneath the soil surface and covered with loose soil and light mulch. Proper shading was given and water was added for the growth of tea seedlings. Weeding and forking were done when needed. Data were recorded after 4 months of growth. This experiment is one of the experiments of author's Ph.D work published in Ph.D thesis. The analytical methods used to determine different constituents are given below: values were measured with combined glass/calomel electrode in 1 : 2.5 soil water ratio. Organic carbon was determined by wet oxidation method and organic matter was calculated multiplying by 1.72. Total nitrogen determined was measured by Kjeldhl digestion method followed by steam distillation apparatus. Exchangeable bases were determined on the ammonium acetate (pH 7) leachate and subsequent estimation by using Perking-Elmer 1100B atomic absorption spectrophotometer against a known set of individual standard.

Calcium oxide @ 300, 600, 900 and Kg/ha were broadcasted on the soil and then mixed throughlt. Plant parameters studied were lenght, diameter and fresh Weight of shoots and roots. Soil samples were analysed before and after the end of experiment. all the treatments of lime performed better than that of control. Soil pH and calcium status were also increased slightly due to lime application.
