The study was carried out to evaluate the long term yield and quality performances of four vegetatively propagated test clones of tea namely BS1/1/107, BS1/1/111, BS1/3/31 and BS1/3/45 selected from the F1 progeny of the biclonal tea seed stock BTSI (BT1 X TV1). BTRI released standard clone, one of the parents of the progeny BT1 was used as a control. The results of the experiment revealed that amongst the four test clones, BS/1/111 gave the highest significant yield of 4830 kg/ha made tea compared to 3621 kg/ha made tea for the control BT1, 4130 kg for BS1 /1 /107, 3981 kg for BS1/3/31 and 4747 kg for BS1/3/45 in the 9th year after plantation. At immature stage i.e.1st year to 5th year after plantation, on an average 12% more crop was obtained from the test clone BS1/1/111 over the control BTl and was the highest amongst the test clones evaluated. The overall cup quality of the test clones and the control were assessed by conventional organoleptic test. The cup quality of all the test clones was found to be excellent while cup quality of control BT1 was above average. Considering yield and quality potentials, the test clone BS1/1/111 appeared quite promising to be released, as a quality clone while BS1/3/45 was also found equally prospective.

To study the long term yield and quality performances of four vegetatively propagated test clones of tea selected from the Fl progeny of biclonal tea seed stock BTS1 (BTl X TV1).

The experiment was conducted at Bilashcherra experimental farm of Bangladesh Tea Research Institute during 1992-2001. Seeds were collected from the biclonal seed barie (Stock - BTS1; BTl X TV1) during 1983, which were raised at BTRI nursery. Fl progenies were then transferred into the field at the end of 1984 consisting of 1260 plants. These Fl progenies were taken as the base population for the present study. After six years of observation, some bushes were selected from the Fl population on the basis of morphology, vigour, quality and adaptability. Later cuttings were taken from the selected bushes in order to perform long- term trial. Among the selected bushes four vegetatively propagated test clones coded as BS1/1/107, BS1/1/111, BS1/3/31 and BS1/3/45 were put to a long- term field trial during April 1992. The experimental design was Latin square with five replications and having 105 x 60 cm spacing. There were fifteen plants per plot. BTRI released clone BTl which is also one of the parent of the stock was included as a control. The experiment is conducted in rain fed condition. NPK mixture was applied as per BTRI recommendations (BTRI Pamphlet Nos. 21 & 22). Young and mature tea pruning schedule were followed as per BTRI recommendations (for young tea - Decenter-Prune-Skiff-Prune-5kiff and for mature tea - Light prune-Deep skiff-Medium skiff-Light skiff). The green leaf was harvested on weekly plucking basis during the plucking season starting from mid-March to mid-December throughout the experimental period. Yield data were recorded and analysed statistically for each year and also over the years starting from the first year after planting the plants in the trial plot. The yield was expressed as mean yield of green leaf g per plant and is presented separately for immature (1st - 5th year) and mature (6th - 9th year) stage. The made tea kg per hectare was also calculated on the basis of 23% recovery from green leaf and 15,875 plants per hectare at 105cm x 60cm spacing. The quality performances of made tea manufactured by roll-CTC method in the BTRI mini tea factory of all the test clones and control were assessed weekly by conventional organoleptic test and scored numerically.

It was observed that the cup characters of all the test clones were found superior to control. These three test clones consistently produced tea of excellent quality. They have coppery bright infusion, very bright attractive strong liquor with useful strength, briskness and thick creaming down Considering the quality excellence and yield performance throughout the study period compared to the control and other test clones, the test clone BS1 /1 /111 appeared superior to be released as a quality clone. The other test clone BS1/3/45 was also found prospective in quality characters and yield and can be used as a standard/quality clone or valuable breeding stock.
