Terminal Drought Mitigation Through Date of Transplanting Approaches in T. Aman, 2012

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to document impact analysis of supplemental irrigation for timely crop establishment; to determine effect of drought for different transplanting dates; and to determine drought severity and its probability at different growth stages of T. Aman. A long duration variety (BR11) and a short duration variety (BRRI dhan33) were tested during T. Aman season. There were four treatments with three replications in the experiment and the treatments were transplanting date 10 July (T₁), transplanting date 17 July (T₂), transplanting date 24 July (T₃) and transplanting date 31 July (T₄). BRRI recommended cultural and fertilizer management practices were followed. Thirty-day-old rice seedlings were transplanted after proper land preparation with 20 cm x 20 cm spacing. Individual plot size was 5 m x 3 m, separated by 60 cm buffer zone. A rain gauge was installed near the experimental field to record the daily rainfall during the growing period of rice. The historical rainfall data were collected from the Department of Agricultural Extension, Kushtia. The drought amount (deficit water in soil) was calculated using drought model (developed by Dr. Towfiqul Islam). It was found both in the previous and this year that transplanting dates before 17 July gave comparatively less yield than the others. Both short and long duration T. Aman rice varieties suffered less drought and showed good yield performance when they were transplanted on 24 July to 31 July. In T. Aman 2012, suitable dates of transplanting to mitigate terminal drought were between July 24 to July 31 for all medium and long duration rice varieties.

Achievement/Findings:

BRRI dhan33 suffered comparatively less drought than BR11 due to its shorter growth duration. Due to sufficient rain and rainfall occurred at regular interval in the month of July, August and September compared to the previous year for BRRI dhan33 and BR11, the drought amount was observed almost same for all transplanting dates in T. Aman, 2012. It is noticeable that when drought amount is less than 15 mm then it indicates light drought. Since during reproductive and ripening stages drought amount was less than 15 mm, so drought was not occurred and consequently yield difference was insignificant. BRRI dhan33 did not suffer from drought in the reproductive stage irrespective of transplanting dates.

BRRI dhan33 transplanted on July 31, yielded higher (5.29 t/ha) than the other treatments. For all the treatment total amount of drought during whole season is around 20 mm. It indicates that drought was not severe during the whole growing period this year. So the yield difference is not significant this year due to different transplanting dates. For BR11, the highest yield was found for July 24 transplanting (5.26 t/ha). Lowest yield was observed in case of July 10 (4.9 t/ha) transplanting. Almost all the treatments faced fewer droughts than the previous years.
