Scheduling of Boro Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the haor area farmer have a tendency to use residual flood water to raise seedling as well as transplanting the rice crop. Contrary, delayed transplanting with over-aged seedling is usual practice in many of the high land Boro. Although BRRI recommends that 45 days-old from November seeded seedlings should be transplanted. Because of variation in seeding time and seedling age, the crop exhibits different phenological features to affect grain yield. Therefore, an experiment was conducted Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur during Boro season in 2006 to find out a range of seedling age to harvest an optimum yield. In case of November seeding, 20 to 45 days old seedlings for long duration variety and 20- 35 days old seedling may be transplanted obtaining 7 tha^-1 grain yield. Seeding in October for short duration variety should be avoided for escaping the cold injury. But when needed to transplant from October seeded seedlings, 55 to 70 days old seedlings of short duration variety like BRRI dhan28 or long duration variety should be transplanted. In case of BRRI dhan28, growth duration varied from 152 to 1 90 days for seedlings from 15 October seeded bed and 143 to 170 days 15 November seeded due to using of 20 to 90- day-old seedlings. Contrary, in case of BRRI dhan29, growth duration varied from 180 to 210 days for seedling from 15 October seeded bed and 160 to 175 days for 15 November seeded bed in such situation.

Objectives:

To find out a range of seedling age to harvest an optimum yield.

Methodology:

A short duration variety like BRRI dhan28 and a long duration variety like RRRI dhan29 were selected. Sprouted seeds of these two varieties were seeded in seedbed on 15 October and 1 5 November, 2006. Seedlings of October and November seeded bed were transplanted starting from 20-day-old seedling to 90-day-old seedlings at 5 day interval using I seedling hill^-1’ and 20 X 20 cm spacing. RCB design was followed with 3 replications. Grain yield and growth duration were measured and grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture level.

Grain yield was significantly affected by seeding time and seedling age for both the varieties and the relationship between seedling age and grain yield was quadratic for both the seeding time and varieties. For November seeding, 20-45 days seedling age was the best to obtain good yield for long duration variety, BRRI dhan29 and then declined. However, older seedling also produced reasonable yield. For example, 20-45 days old seedling of BRRI dhan29 produced 7-7. t/ha while 90 days old seedling produced more than5 t/ha. Similar pattern was found in case of short duration variety. BRRI dhan 28. In that case 20-35 days old seedling produced more than 6 t/ha and then declined. BRRI dhan28 also produced reasonable yield up to 80 days old seedling which was more 5 t/ha. November seeding BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 might overcome the cold spell, resulted in higher grains per unit area and lower sterility. In case of October seeding, the similar pattern like November seeding was found for long duration variety. The better range of seedling age was 30- 65 days to obtain good yield for long duration variety. But in case of October seeded short duration variety, the whole reproductive phage suffered in cold injury for younger seedling up to 20-40 days old seedling resulted in higher sterility and lower grains per unit area. After then, the grain yield was reasonably increased upto 70 days old seedling. The growth duration increased remarkably with the increase of seedling age irrespective of varieties and seeding time and the relationship between growth duration and seedling age was significant (r = > 0.9*).
