Photosynthetic Responses of BRRI Varieties at Different Light Intensities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice is classified as a C₃ plant despite isolated claims of C₄ characteristics even Pmax is very low compared to other cereals especially wheat. Photosynthetic responses of rice varieties are highly variable within varieties and even within same plants in different leaves. An experiment was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur during T. Aman season in 2008 to compare the photosynthetic responses of BRRI released transplanted Aman varieties. The photosynthetic efficiency of BRRI transplanted Aman varieties varied substantially. Among the tested varieties photosynthetic efficiency was found higher in BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan33 and BR3. That means the following three varieties might have higher adaptability with respect to varying light environments. Light compensation and saturation among the tested varieties lies in the range from 20-60 and 600-1600 μmol (photon) m^-2 s^-1 respectively.

Objectives:

To compare the photosynthetic responses of BRRI released transplanted Aman varieties.

Methodology:

All T. Aman varieties were grown in the BRRI farm according to the recommended management practices and inputs in RCBD with 3 replications. CO₂exchange was measured with a Li-Cor 6400 portable photosynthesis measurement system at ambient temperature, humidity and CO₂ concentration, flow rate 500 μmol s^-1and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) varies between 50 to 2100 μmol (photon) m^-2 s^-1 by using auto program set in the system. Irradiance was provided by Red Blue light emitting diode (LED) set on the top of the leaf chamber. Photosynthesis data were recorded within 3-5 days after flowering of the top most flag leaf of a hill and one measurement was taken from each replication.

Achievement/Findings:

The photosynthesis rate was found better in BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan33 and BR3 (slope of logarithmic relationship was 20.42, 17.88 and 16.37 respectively) but most of the varieties showed moderate rate, slope ranged from 10-14. While the lowest rate (7.5) was found in an aromatic variety BR5 developed through pure line selection from local germplasms in addition to that its yield potential (3 tha^-1) ever the lowest among BRRI released varieties. Photosynthetic efficiency depends on the slope of the light response curve at lower light level. Among the tested varieties photosynthetic efficiency was found higher in BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan33 and BR3. That means the following three varieties might have higher adaptability with respect to varying light environments. Light compensation and saturation among the tested varieties lies in the range from 20-60 and 600-1600 μmol (photon) m^-2 s^-1 respectively.
