Effect of Drought on Different T. Aman Varieties -2012

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the relative drought tolerance of the T. Aman varieties based on the yield performance; and to find out suitable T. Aman variety for drought prone area. A total of 12 popular T. Aman varieties were grown under irrigated and rainfed environment. These varieties were classified into 3 categories based on the growth duration. There were 3 short duration, 3 medium duration and 6 long duration varieties. Short duration varieties were BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan46. Medium duration varieties were BR25, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan49. And long duration varieties were BR11, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41 and BRRI dhan44.The seeding was done on 9^th July 2012 and transplanting on 8^th August 2012. TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate were applied during the last ploughing. Urea were top dressed twice during the vegetative growth. Weeding were done after urea application. The rainfed plots were separated from the irrigated plots with 1 m buffer area. The levee of the rainfed plots was covered with polythene sheet. The perched water level status in the plots was monitored by installing perforated PVC tubes. Supplemental irrigation was applied in the irrigated plots when water level reaches 15cm below the ground surface. Water level data showed that stress was experienced in the rainfed plots from 9 October to 3 November 2012 and 10 November- 7 December 2012. BRRI dhan 33 and BRRI dhan39 were remain under stress during later part of the ripening phase. BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan49 were remain under stress condition since earlier part of the ripening phase. BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan44 were remain under stress condition since earlier part of the ripening phase. BR23, BRRI dhan41 ad BRRI dhan46 were remain under stress condition since the later part of the reproductive phase. The mean yield reduction due to drought stress in varieties ranges from 1.7 to 18.6 percent. Highest yield reduction was found for BRRI dhan44 (18.6%) followed by BR 23 (17.9%), BRRI dhan41 (16.9%), BRRI dhan46 (15.9%), BR 25 (14.6%), BRRI dhan39 (12.7%) and BR 11 (12.5%). Yield reduction was lowest for BRRI dhan31 (1.7%) followed by BRRI dhan30 (3.2%), BRRI dhan49 (4.9%), BRRI dhan33 (7.2%) and BRRI dhan40 (7.6%), respectively. Considering the growth duration, rainfall and perched water table data BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan40 were found more drought stress tolerant than the other varieties.

Highest yield reduction was found for BRRI dhan44 (18.6%) followed by BR 23 (17.9%), BRRI dhan41 (16.9%), BRRI dhan46 (15.9%), BR 25 (14.6%), BRRI dhan39 (12.7%) and BR 11 (12.5%). Yield reduction was lowest for BRRI dhan31 (1.7%) followed by BRRI dhan30 (3.2%), BRRI dhan49 (4.9%), BRRI dhan33 (7.2%) and BRRI dhan40 (7.6%), respectively.
