Effect of Nano-gro as a Growth Regulator on the Growth and Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Agro Nanotechnology, USA develops an organic compound named Nano-gro. An experiment was conducted in Physiology Division of BRRI during Boro season in 2007 to investigate the effectivity of Nano-gro on the growth and yield of rice. BRRI dhan28 was used for the study. The yield advantage of 9-10% was achieved through Nano-gro treatments as follows i) Sprouted seed soaking by Nano-gro solution for 30 seconds and then seeding in the seedbed, ii) Seed soaking by Nano-gro solution for 30 seconds before incubation and Nano-gro solution spray again in the seedbed by foliar at 14 days after seeding and iii) Nano-gro solution spraying in the field at active tillering stage (42-50 DAT).

Objectives:

To investigate the effectivity of Nano-gro on the growth and yield of rice.

Methodology:

Seed, seedling and plant of BRRI dhan28 was treated by Nano-gro solution in different treatments which were as follows (1) T₁: Seeds soaked in Nano-gro solution for 30 seconds and then seeded in the seedbed, (2) T₂: Seeds soaked in Nano-Gro solution for 30 seconds and then incubated for germination, (3) T₃: Seeds soaked in tap water for 24 hrs and then it soaked again in Nano-gro solⁿfor 30 sec, (4) T₄: Sprouted seed soaked in Nano-gro solution for 30 sec. and then it seeded in the seedbed, (5) T₅: T₁+ foliar application of Nano-gro solution at 14 DAS, (6) T₆: T₂+ foliar application of Nano-gro solution at 14 DAS, (7) T₇: T₃+ foliar application of Nano-gro solution at 14 DAS, (8) T₈: T₄+ foliar application of Nano-gro solution at 14 DAS, (9) T₉: Seedling roots soaked in Nano-gro solution and then transplanted, (10) T₁₀: Seed soaked in Nano-gro solution for 24 hrs and then incubated for germination, (11) T₁₁: Nano-gro solution sprayed in the field at active tillering stage and (12) T₁₂: Seedling grown as per BRRI recommendation. Solution was prepared @ 1 pellet/1L water and applied by sprayer as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out using RCB Design with 2 replications. Ten seedlings were collected at transplanting for measuring seedling height and weight. Plant sample for different growth parameters were collected at maximum tillering stage. Plant height, yield and yield components were taken at maturity stage.

Achievement/Findings:

Treatment 4, 5, 8 and 12 (same as 9 and 11) produced taller seedling but these could not reflected in their seedling weight as well as seedling strength. The highest plant height was observed in T₃ treatment but the T₅treatment produced the vigorous plant having higher leaf area index and total dry matter followed by T₄ and T₉ treatments which were better than control treatment (T₁₂). T₅ treatment produced significantly higher grain yield (6.08 t/ha) which was statistically similar to T₄, T₆ and T₁₁ treatments than that of control treatment (5.35 t/ha) resulted of higher grains/m², LAI, TDM and lower sterility. The range of yield advantage of some nano-gro treatments over control treatment was 1.7 - 13.6%. Growth duration decreased 0-6 days over different treatments compared to BRRI recommended treatment (T₁₂) when seed was treated by Nano-gro solution before seeding. Contrary the growth duration was same or increased 2 days compared to BRRI recommended treatment over the treatments when Nano-gro solution sprayed either in seedbed or the main field except T₅treatment. Some of the Nano-gro treatments (T₅_,T₄, T₆ and T₁₁) were able to enhance vigorous plant growth and increase grain yield to some extent. Among these nano-gro treatments T₅ treatment showed best performance with respect to plant growth and grain yield.
