Effects of Different Levels of N, P and K Fertilizers on the Quality of Groundnut : Kernel Protein Content

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment with groundnut (Dacca-I) on four different soils of Bangladesh was undertaken to study the effect of N, P and K fertilizers on the kernel protein content. Urea @ 0,20,30 and 40 kg N/ha, T.S.P.@ 0,40, 60 and 80 kg P₂O₅/ha and muriate of potash @ 0, 40, 60 and 80 kg K₂0₅/ha were used in the experiment. There were 4 x 4 x 4 experimental units in a completely randomized design. The highest amount of kernel protein contents were found in N₃₀P₆₀K_6o, N₄₀P₈₀K₈₀, N₃₀P₆₀K₆₀ and NaoP SOK60 treatments in University farm soil, Kuliarchar soil, Sutiakhali char soil and Modhupur Red soil, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the effect of N, P and K fertilizers on the kernel protein content.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in pots in an open net house at the Banqladesh Agricultural University Farm area, Mymensingh. Four soil samples representing four different soil locations were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Kuliar Char, Sutiakhali Char and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation Staff Training Institute, Modhupur respectively, at plough depth of (0-15cm). The characteristics of the soils are presented. Soil samples were dried at room temperature and ground to pass through a 10 mesh sieve and thoroughly mixed. Each pot was filled with 6230 g of the air dried soil.

The four representative soils were treated with four levels of NPK fertilizers in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 2. The fertilizer sources were urea @ 0,20,30 and 40 kg/ha and triple superphosphate and muriate of potash both @ 0,40,60 and 80 kg/ha. Fertilizers were placed in bands at 4 cm soil depths before sowing seeds. The experiment was replicated 4 times giving a total number of 64 experimental units. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design. Three shelled groundnuts of the high yielding Dac-1 variety were planted in each pot after treating with ceresan, a dust fungicide on the 15th December of 1972. On the 20th January of 1973, two seedlings were removed Ieaving one healthy plant in each pot and on the same day first earthing up was done. Second earthing up was done on the 30th March of 1973.

The nuts were harvested on .the 30th April of 1973, after one hundred and forty days when the plants showed yellowish colour and the leaves began to die. Harvesting was done by' uprooting the entire plant. The nuts were separated tram the plants and dried in the sun separately for each treatment. The nuts were then oven dried at 65°C overnight, ground in Wiley Mill. Total nitrogen content of the kernel and shoot was deterrnir.ed by digestion with H₂SO₄ and distillation with 40% NaOH, the NH₃ distilled over was taken up by an excess of 0.1 N Hcl as outlined by Jackson (1962). The protein content of the kernel was estimated by multiplying the total nitrogen content with the conventional factor of 6.25 as described by A.O.A.C. (1965).
