Effect of Irrigation and Weed Management on Transplanted Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out to analyze the effect of irrigation and weed management on transplanted boro rice in silty clay soil of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur, during 2003-2004. Irrigation and weed control were taken as variables in this study. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Irrigation at 3 days after disappearing standing water (DADSW) produced relatively more grain yield (4.64 t/ha) followed by standing water (up to 5-7cm). Herbicide application at 6 days after transplanting (DAT) with two hand weedings each at 35 and 55 DAT gave significantly higher grain yield (5.19 t/ha) followed by the yield obtained from herbicide application at 6 DAT with one hand weeding at 35 DAT. The highest grain yield (5.41 t/ha) was obtained from the interaction of irrigation at 3 days after disappearing standing water (DADSW) and herbicide application at 6 DAT with two hand weedings each at 35 and 55 DAT (I₃W₃). Water use and relative water supply/(RWS) were higher in standing water up to 5-7cm, which gave the lowest water use efficiency (WUE). Water at saturation level showed the highest WUE (70.2%) followed by irrigation at 3 DADSW (69.8%). The highest water productivity (4.16 kg/ha-mm) was obtained from irrigation at 3 DADSW. Also, the highest Net Return of Tk. 11779/ha was obtained from irrigation at 3 DADSW and herbicide application at 6 DAT with two hand weedings each at 35 and 55 DAT (I₃W₃) which is the best practice for boro cultivation.

Objectives:

To determine less water use without reducing yield and control weed by appropriate water and weed management practices.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out in silty clay loam soil of BRRI farm, Gazipur to study the effect of water and weed management in transplanted rice cultivation in boro season 2003-2004. Plot size was 3m x 4m. The seeds were soaked for 24 hours. Rice cultivar BRRI dhan 28 were sown in seedbed on 26 Dec. 2003. Transplanting was done on February 2, 2004 with 2-3 seedlings hill^-1. The crop spacing was 20cm x 20cm. A single dose of 120kg TSP/ha, 85kg MP/ha, 60kg Gypsum/ha and 10kg Zn/ha was applied during final land preparation and 220kg Urea/ha was applied at three equal splits at 15, 30 and 55 DAT. Pesticide cidial 50 was applied for insect control. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with 3 replications. In the management, there were three water treatments in the main plot and three weed management treatments in the sub plot. Irrigation regimes were: continuous standing water, 2.5-5cm deep, throughout the crop period (I₁), saturation throughout the crop period (I₂), and application of 5cm water 3 days after disappearance of standing water (DADSW) (I₃). Saturation was maintained by applying 2cm of water when required. Thus, excess or standing water was not present and hairline cracks did not develop. The weed control treatments were in sub plot and they were herbicide spray at 6 DAT (WI), herbicide spray at 6 DAT with one hand weeding at 35 DAT (W₂) and herbicide spray at 6 DAT with two hand weedings one each at 35 and 55 DAT (W₃). Rice was harvested on 9th May, 2004. Yield data and yield contributing parameters were recorded. For estimation of grain yields, 1m² samples were harvested from each plot and grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content. Number of panicles was counted from 1m² samples. Number of grains/panicle was estimated from 10 randomly selected panicles from each sample. Data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Irrigation and weed management reduces weed in rice field. From the study, highest grain yield was obtained from irrigation at 3 DADSW and herbicide application at 6 DAT plus two hand weedings each at 35 DAT and 55 DAT (I₃W₃). Dominance analysis showed that irrigation at 3DADSW and irrigation at saturation level with weed management of only herbicide use or herbicide use with one hand weeding or herbicide use with two hand weedings gave higher net benefits.
