Elongation ability and submergence tolerance in rice genotypes both are essentially needed for medium (50-100 cm) type deep water land. But these two characters are distinct plant characters that represent opposite mechanism or strategies of flood adoption. An experiment was conducted in Physiology Division of BRRI in 2007 to evaluate the physiological performance as well as determine  yield and yield components of some deep water rice genotype. Among the tested genotype IR42436-266-3-2-3 performed better yield due to higher elongation ability and shoot weight.

Twenty one advanced genotypes with one check variety Hbj A II (Hobigong Aman II) were considered for this experiment. Seedlings were grown in culture solution. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in deep water tank. After 60 DAT plants were submerged 50 cm initially and it was raised upto 100 cm by increasing 5cm every day. After two months of submergence water was receded from the tank and plants were normally grown upto maturity. After harvesting no. of internodes were counted and cumulative length of internodes were measured. Shoot dry weight, filled grain, unfilled grain and grain yield/3 hills were determined. Among 22 genotypes one genotype could not survive upto maturity.

Number of elongated internodes were ranged from 11-16 among genotype. In IR42436-266-3-2-3 it was the highest (16) and IR71360-3B-12-2-3-2B it was the lowest (11). In check Hbj A II it was 15.  Alim et al. (1962) reported that elongation was mainly due to the production of a greater number of internodes. None of the genotype showed elongation ability like check. 270.26cm. It is the highest in Hbj A ll  followed by  IR62669-2B-R-B-R-10-2-2-3.  They have showed good elongation ability compare to others. Total internode length was due equally to increase in internode no. and internode length (Kihara et al., 1962). The number of nodes and elongated internodes produced by flooding depends on the depth of the water and the varietal character.  Hbj.AII easily elongates 10 cm/d. Shoot weight was the highest in Hbj A II (277.4 g/3hill) followed on IR65142-3R-R-13-1-2-1 and IR42436-266-3-2-3. Filled grain was the highest in IR42436-266-3-2-3 and lowest (78) in  IR70663-4B-16-2-2-2B. Unfilled grain was the lowest in Hbj A II  and followed on IR42436-266-3-2-3. Nineteen genotype showed similar growth duration with check variety Hbj A II. Although two genotypes showed 30 days later than other genotype. Deep water rice show a wide range of critical photoperiod (Catling, 1992). There was a wide variability of yield among genotype. It was ranged five to above hundred gm. In IR42436-266-3-2-3 it was the highest and it was also higher from check (Hbj A II). But other genotype showed less yield than check. In all of the genotype shoot weight were lower compared to ck. Though shoot weight was higher in IR65142-3R-R-13-1-2-1 and IR42436-266-3-2-3 compare to other tested genotype. But growth duration was higher in IR65142-3R-R-13-1-2-1. As a result IR42436-266-3-2-3 performed better in respect of yield.
