Effect of Climatic Factors on the Phenology, Yield and Yield Components of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Climatic factors (CTs) influence the growth, development and grain yield of rice directly as well as indirectly. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in Physiology Division of BRRI in May’2007 to June’2008 to develop a regression model between important climatic elements and growth behavior including grain yield of photo sensitive, short duration and long duration varieties. In Boro season, irrespective of varieties produce considerably higher grain yield when seeded on mid November to mid December. i.e. transplanting on mid December to mid January with 30 days old seedlings. Among the tested varieties BRRI dhan29 gave the highest yield (6.98 t/h) at 15 November seeding. In T. Aman season, irrespective of varieties produce considerably higher grain yield when seeded on mid June to mid July and in Aus season, all the varieties produced higher grain yields when seeded on mid April.

Objectives:

To develop a regression model between important climatic elements and growth behavior including grain yield of photo sensitive, short duration and long duration varieties.

Methodology:

Thirty day old seedlings of BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan44 and BRRI dhan45 were transplanted at an interval of 30 days in four lines since 15 May, 2007 to 15 June, 2008 except transplanting on 15 July and 15 October, 2007 and 15 February, 2008. TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied as basal dose and Urea in three splits. All the fertilizers were applied as per BRRI recomendation. The dates of seedling, transplanting, flowering and maturity were recorded. The yield data were taken from 5m² area and yield components data were taken from 10 randomly selected hills outside of the area fixed for yield measurement.

Achievement/Findings:

All the varieties produced higher grain yields during Boro season compared to Aus and T. Aman seasons reflecting the better climatic condition during Boro season than T. Aus and T. Aman seasons. All the varieties produced the highest grain yields from the 15 November seeding followed by 15 December seeding. However, BRRI dhan29 produced the highest grain yield of 6.98 t/ha on 15 November seeding and it produced about 6 t/ha during seeding from mid November to mid December. Filled grain (No./Panicle) varied remarkably among the varieties over the seeding times. In fact, it (no./m²) varied from 23 to 150 over the varieties and seeding times reflecting the climatic variation over the seeding times. Similarly, sterility (%) varied enormously over the varieties and seedling times. Growth duration (GD) of all the varieties varied considerably over the seeding times. In fact, GD varied from 104 to 154 days in BRRI dhan28, 126 to 172 days in BRRI dhan29, 125 to 169 days in BRRI dhan39, 146 to 172 days in BRRI dhan40, 146 to 168 days in BRRI dhan44 and 101 to 162 days in BRRI dhan45.
