Inadequate supply of seed is the main barrier to groundnut cultivation in Bangladesh. The field survey at two villages (Algir Char of Gaforgaon and Sener Char, Astadhar of Sadar Upazila) of Mymensingh district revealed that no farmer could store groundnut seed due to loss of seed viability during storage. Two experiments were conducted at the Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during August 2009 to February 2011 with a view to developing technology for storing groundnut seed. The experiment 1 comprised four relative humidity (viz. 50, 60, 70 and 80% RH), two storage container (viz. polythene bag and cloth bag), and two seed types (viz. shelled and unshelled groundnut seed) while experiment 2 consisted of four storage containers (viz. polythene bag, tin container, plastic pot and cloth bag), three initial seed moisture content (viz.8, 10 and 12%) and tow seed types (viz. shelled and nu-shelled). Both experiments were set up in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Data on seed moisture content, laboratory germination (%), vigour index and field emergence (%) were recorded, Experiment 1 revealed that the germination performance of both shelled and unshelled groundnut seeds stored in polythene bag at 8% moisture content were similar and decreased with increase of relative humidity. Experiment 2 also showed that seeds stored in polythene bag at 8% moisture content exhibited higher viability performance than those stored in plastic pot or in tin container. The present study further showed that the groundnut seed could maintain higher germination of 78% up to 160 days of storage when stored in polythene bags at 8% moisture content under ambient room condition. The result concludes that shelled or unshelled groundnut seed could be stored safely with high viability for about 5 to 6 months in ambient room conditions by keeping in polythene bags after drying to 8% initial seed moisture content.

Both field survey and laboratory experiment s will be undertaken in this project for two years (2009-10 abd 2010-11), Field survey at two villages of each to two Upazillas (Sadar and Gaforgaon of Mymensingh district will be conducted to know the present status of groundnut seed supply, its marketing channel and quality in 2009-10 and also in 2010-11. Two laboratory experiments (1) effect of storage container and seed moisture content on groundnut seed quality and (b) Effect of storage relative humidity and type of storage container on groundnut seed quality will be conducted in 2009-10.
