Adoption of Hybrid Rice in Greater Mymensingh Region and Associated Issues: a Technology Dissemination Analysis.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in three selected upazilas from the greater Mymensingh region, namely Phulpur of Mymensingh district, Madan of Netrokona district, and Itna of Kishoreganj district to have an understanding on farmers’ adoption behavior of hybrid rice and associated issues. A structured interview schedule was used for collecting data from 250 randomly selected farmers in the study areas. Data were collected from the selected farmers during April to September, 2009. The results showed that different situation existed across three upazilas in regards with the adoption of hybrid rice by the farmers. In Phulpur (Mymensingh), where all respondents were hybrid rice growers, 38 percent farmers had medium adoption followed by 37 percent and 25 percent had low and high adoption, respectively. On the other hand, in Itna (Kishoreganj), 45 percent of the farmers were non-adopter of hybrid rice, while 40 percent, 11 percent and 4 percent of them had low, medium and high adoption, respectively. It is interesting to note that only 4 percent farmers of Madan upazila (Netrokona) were found to have adopted hybrid rice. As for assessment of hybrid rice as an innovation, the farmers made a mixed range of evaluation concerning its relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability. In Pulpur, 54 percent farmers perceived hybrid rice as having medium benefit, while 43 percent and 3 percent perceived it as having high and low benefits, respectively. Majority of the farmers were not ready to make full use of hybrid rice in entire farm.
