Survey on Surface Water Utilization and Its Scope for Crop Production in Different Agro-ecological Zones of Bangladesh -hilly Area-2013

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey work was done at Hilly area to identify the location specific surface water availability and its utilization for rice and non-rice crop production; to determine the scope for further increase of surface water utilization; and to identify the constraints and prospects for surface water utilization. There were 49, 44, 34, 26, 8, 13, 15 and 17 number of surface water sources found in Khagrachari sadar, Panchari. Diginala, Mohalchori, Matiranga, Ramgarh, Manikchari and Laxmichari Upazilas. Most of those sources were small hill springs, hill streams (Chara), creek dam, surface canal and rivers (Chengi and Mayni). By utilizing the surface water about 998 ha, 1939 ha, 138 ha 71 ha 122 ha 842 ha, 520 ha and 39 ha of land were irrigated under sadar, Panchari. Diginala, Mohalchori, Matiranga, Ramgarh, Manikchari and Laxmichari Upazilas, respectively In Khagrachari district, the number of irrigation devices like LLP (diesel operated), LLP (electric operated) and STW were 2,942, 93 and 11, respectively. Rain water harvesting, ring well renovation, rubber dam or river cross dam in Chegi river and Myani river, hill water conservation from small hill stream by making creek dam could conserve surface water and used for agricultural and domestic purposes in the region. Finally, cultivable land could be increased by proper management of existing surface water from those sources.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A survey was conducted in Khagrachari Districts to evaluate the present surface water utilization status and its future scope for crop production. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Discussion was also held with DAE. BADC. LGED, BWDB and other related organization to acquire broader idea about surface water utilization for crop production.
