Monitoring of Groundwater Fluctuation and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2013

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to determine the fluctuation of groundwater level over time and its relationships with rainfall and to determine water quality including arsenic. Available water level recorder was used for measuring groundwater fluctuation. Rainfall data was collected from nearest meteorological station. During the reporting period maximum lowering of groundwater table was observed in March/April and minimum in September/October. The highest depth (32.48 m) was found in Gazpur and the lowest 91.16 m) in Satkhira areas. Out of seven stations of BRRI four (Habiganj, Kushtia, Rangpur and Satkhira) was suitable for operating STW and the rest three (Gazipur, Comilla and Rajshahi) was not suitable for using STW during the critical period (March/April) of boro season. The maximum and minimum groundwater table depth from 1979 to 2013 showed that both maximum and minimum groundwater level at BRRI farm, Gazipur is declining day by day and it was fully recharged after the monsoon. In 1979, the maximum groundwater level was about 9 m from the ground surface which was more than 32 m in 2013. So, the lowering was about 23 m in 35 years. During the initial period the lowering rate was not so high. From 1979 to 2003 the lowering was only 5 m in 25 years. But at present it was declining at a high rate. From 2003 to 2013 the lowering was about 18 m in 10 years. So the lowering was about 23 m in 35 years which was very alarming situation.
