Effect of Irrigation Application Methods on the Yield of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three irrigation methods, viz., Ridge and furrow (Ml), Bed and furrow (M₂), and Cheek basin (M₃) were tested on tomato (Varety:Ratan) in a silty clay loam soil of Joydebpur during the Rabi seasons of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. The same quantity of irrigation water was applied in each plot at 12 days interval. The highest yields of 46.42 t/ha and 63.21 t/ha were obtained in the same treatment (MI) in both the years. The lowest yields 40.60 t/ha and 51.06 t/ha were also found in the same treatment (M₂) in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, respectively. The fruit weight/plant were found the highest (1.00kg in 1999-2000 and 1.35kg in 2000-2001) in treatment MI. Total irrigation water received by each treatment was 319 mm including 76 mm effective rainfall in 1999-2000 and 325 mm with no rainfall in 2000-2001. The maximum benefit cost ratio of 3.96 and 4.00 and the highest gross margins of Tk. 175300.00/ha and Tk. 237200.00/ha were found in treatment (MI) in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, respectively. The marginal rate of return was 1228 and 1869.23 per cent in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, respectively. In tomato cultivation 12 days irrigation interval with ridge and furrow method of water application was found to be the best among the selected methods for tomato cultivation.

Objectives:

To compare the suitability of Ridge and furrow, Bed and furrow and Cheek basin methods on tomato production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the research field of Irrigation and Water Management Division at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the rabi seasons of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 on tomato (Variety:Ratan) with a randomized complete block design replicated four times. Seedlings of 30 days old were transplanted on December 04, 1999 and November 26, 2000 in the 1^stand 2^nd years, respectively. The field soil was silty clay loam in texture having field capacity 27.5 per cent and bulk density 1.5 g/c.c. The fertilizers were applied at the rate of 550, 450 and 250 kg/ha of Urea, TSP and MP, respectively. The treatments were M₁= Ridge and furrow M₂= Bed and furrow M₃= Check basin Irrigation was applied at 12 days interval for all the methods. The unit plot size was 3.0m x 5.0 m. Row to row and plant to plant spacing were 60 cm and 40 cm, respectively. Amount of irrigation equaling to soil moisture deficit at the root zone was applied to all the plots. Effective rainfall for dry period was calculated on daily basis during the growing period of upland crop like tomato. Soil moisture was determined by gravimetric method. Yield and other agronomic characters viz. fruit length, fruit diameter, weight of fruits per plant and yields were recorded during harvest time. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of variable cost i.e. the costs of land preparation, seedling, fertilizer, labour, irrigation etc. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was calculated following the method.

Achievement/Findings:

From the two years study (1999-2000 and 2000-2001), the highest Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) and Gross Margin (MR) were found in ridge and furrow method by applying irrigation at 12 days interval. So, an irrigation interval of 12 days with ridge and furrow method of water application is a good practice to produce the highest yield in tomato cultivation economically.
