Crop and Water Management for Crop Intensification in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh. (cpwf G2 Cropping System Trials Boro and Rabi Season 2012-13): Polder 30

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field was conducted to increase cropping system production and profitability through: Increasing cropping intensity (triple cropping: aus-aman-boro, aus-aman-rabi); Use of improved rice (optimum duration for triple cropping, stress tolerance and high yielding) and rabi varieties; Improved agronomic management; and Improve drainage system. Two cropping patterns: i) Aman-Fallow- Boro and ii) Aman-Fallow-Rabi Crops were tested in the study location. Early establishment of boro rice sometimes exposed to cold stress but it can be recovered after temperature increase. It is important to have a well maintain seed bed and seedling age in that time to achieve successfully boro rice production. Boro rice could be grown if seed bed is ready first week of November and used some salt tolerant variety. It is possible to harvest HYV boro rice with a yield level 6.0 tha^-1. Water melon, chili, mungbean and maize could be grown in undrained condition with mulched if sown on in December and January. This year these crops performed well and satisfactory yield. Sesame could be grown without mulch in last week of January and first week of February. To achieve better establishment and better yield of these rabi crops it needs to be sown early and when the soil moisture is optimum.

Methodology:

Two cropping patterns: i) Aman-Fallow- Boro and ii) Aman-Fallow-Rabi Crops were tested in the study location. Two rabi crops, sesame and mung bean were cultivated. Rabi crops were sown in both drained and undrained plots when BARI HYV seeds had been used under mulch and unmulched condition. .

Achievement/Findings:

First transplanting was recovered when temperature increased but second and third transplanting was damaged after some days due to cold and yield of first transplanting was 4.9 t/ha.The two rabi crops sesame and mungbean had a lower plant density in both drained and undrained plots when BARI HYV seeds had been used. Yield of sesame varied from 0.1 to 1.6 t ha^-1 among the crop and water management treatments. Highest yield (1.63 t ha^-1) of sesame obtained in mulched plot with farmers variety and fertiliser (m₄). Mungbean yield varied from 0.35 to 1.6 t ha^-1 among all the treatments. Highest yield was found (1.6 t ha^-1) when bari mungbean was established in rows and mulched with improved management i.e., m₅_.Growth duration of sesame varied from 83 to 98 days among the drained, undrained plots and the management practices. Sesame had a higher growth duration in drained plots compare to that of undrained plots, except m⁵ of drained and undrained sesame had the same duration. Growth duration of mungbean was same in all treatments under drained and undrained conditions. Mungbean was picked up twice at an interval of 7 days and it varied from 77 to 84 days.
