Attitude of Farmers Towards Hybrid Rice Alok 6201

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose 01' this study was to investigate the attitude of farmers towards a hybrid rice variety (Alok 620 I). problem confrontation during cultivation of Alok 620 I rice and also to explore the relationships with selected characteristics of rice growers. Data were collected during 0 I June to 20 July 2000 from a randomly selected sample of 117 hybrid rice growers out of 292 growers, from Manda, Mohadebpur and Patnitala Upazilas of Naogaon district. Attitude of farmers towards the use of hybrid rice was ascertained through a 5-point Likert scale. The highest proportion (45 percent) of rice growers had moderate, 27 percent unfavourable and 28 percent .had favourable attitude towards hybrid rice Alok 620 I. The findings also showed the education and cosmopoliteness of rice growers had significant negative correlations with their attitudes towards hybrid rice Alok 620 I. Rest of the selected characteristics namely, age, family size, agricultural knowledge, farm size, annual family income, credit availability, extension media contact, agricultural training experience, fatalism and aspiration had no significant relationships with the attitudes towards hybrid rice Alok 620 I. In respect of problem confrontation, the findings revealed that the highest proportion (54 percent) of hybrid rice growers had high, 38 percent had medium and 9 percent low problem confrontation during cultivation of hybrid rice Alok 620 I.

Objectives:

1. The objective of this study was to ascertain farmers' attitude towards the use of hybrid rice, Alok 6201.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Manda, Mohadebpur and Patnitala Upazilas under Naogaon district. Out of 292 hybrid rice growers of these three Upazilas, I I 7 (40% of tlJe total population) farmers were selected randomly. Data were collected through direct interview from the hybrid rice growers during 0 I June to 20 July 2000. Attitude of farmers towards hybrid rice variety Alok 620 I was the dependent and 12 selected characterist.cs of hybrid rice growers were the independent variables of this study. The variables were: Age, Education, Family size, Agricultural knowledge, Agricultural training experience, Farm size, Annual family income, Credit availability, Cosmopoliteness, Extension media contact, Fatalism and Aspiration. Attitude of farmers towards the LIse of hybrid rice was ascertained through a 5-point-likert type scale having 12 statements (5 positive and 7 negative). Farmers' agreement on 12 statements were ascertained as 'strongly agree', 'agree', 'no opinion', 'disagree' and 'strongly disagree' with corresponding scores of 4, 3, 2, I and O. Thus, for a respondent the attitude score could vary from V to 48. Problem confrontation of rice growers were measured through a scale containing 12 statements based on hybrid rice cultivation.
