Adoption of Improved Sugarcane Cultivation Practices by the Cane Growers in a Selected Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of the study was to find out the extent of adoption of seven selected sugarcane cultivation practices by the cane growers. Attempts were also made to determine some of the selected characteristics and their relationships with adoption behaviour of the cane growers. Out of 500 cane growers of four villages under Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur District, 100 cane growers were interviewed for collection of data during January 10 to March 10,1991. About two-thirds (68 percent) of the growers were found to have medium to high and 32 percent low adoption of seven sugarcane production practices. The characteristics such as, level of education, organizational participation, extension contact and cosmopoliteness of the farmers were significantly related to their adoption of improved sugarcane cultivation practices. The strengthening of adult education and extension activities were recommended to increase the extent of adoption of improved practices in sugarcane cultivation.

Objectives:

1. To explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the sugarcane growers with their adoption of improved practices in sugarcane cultivation.

Methodology:

The population of this study consisted of all the cane growers of Sreepur and Talihattee Unions of Srecpur Upazila under Gazipur District. Each Union consists of several villages. The researchers first selected two villages of each Union following random sampling method. The total number of cane growers in 4 villages were 500 out of which 20 percent of cane growers were selected from each of the four villages by using a table of random number. Thus, a total of 100 cane growers constituted the sample for this study. Data were collected personally by using a structured interview schedule during January 10, 1991 to March 10, 1991. Improved practices in respect to cultivation of sugarcane refer to those practices advocated by some competent authority. These practices, if used, would be helpful for increasing the quantity and quality of yield of sugarcane. In this study, seven improved practices of sugarcane cultivation were considered. The adoption index of the selected practices was measured on the basis of opinions provided by the cane growers according to their extent of application of seven improved tanning practices either fully or partially during the previous cane growing season. Hence, the extent of adoption of each of the seven improved practices was ascertained by computing an adoption score. Among the improved practices of sugarcane cultivation, a three-point scale was used in measuring the high yielding variety score. The weights were assigned such as, I for LI V, 2 for L1Y+MY and 3 for MY. The method of planting was determined by giving scores, such as, I for furrow, 2 for furrow +trench and 3 for trench method. The fertilizer dose was ascertained by giving weights as I for lower dose, 2 for partially recommended dose and 3 for recommended dose. The weights were assigned I for low. 2 for moderate and 3 for adequate management in measuring the pest management scores. A weight of I for late planting :2 for both early and late and 3 Ill!' optimum time or planting were the weights for measuring lime or planting of the cane growers. I'he ,YStCIll of planting was determined by assigning scores, such as, I for traditional and :2 for STP method of sugarcane cultivation. The iniercropping was measured by using two-point scale and weights were given such as, I for single crop and 2 for inter-cropping with other crop. The adoption scores of a respondent for the seven practices were added together to obtain his overall adoption score. The overall adoption score of a respondent thus. could range from 7 to 19, where 7 indicating low adoption and 19 for high adoption of seven improved practices in sugarcane cultivation.

Achievement/Findings:

The data revealed that about two-thirds (65.00 percent) of the farmers had varying degree of literacy. On the basis of positive relationship between education and adoption behaviour of the cane growers, it may be concluded that the extent of adoption of the improved sugarcane practices would be further increased if educational level of the cane growers are improved.
