Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at farming systems research and development (FSRD) site, Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 to determine the effect of integrated farming intervention on total development of a small farm and to find out a module for resource specific technology integration. The study was carried out considering farming as his major profession having crop-livestock-fishery system. A number of new technologies were adopted in different sub sectors of the test farm family. The gross margin from crop, livestock, fishery and homestead sector increased from Tk.30,725.00 to Tk.55,432.00 in one year due to the intervention of technologies. The family nutrition, resource use, awareness to child education, social status and microenvironment were improved considerably due to intervention.

Objectives:

1. To determine the effect of integrated farming intervention on total development of a farm family and to find out a module for resource specific technology integration.

Methodology:

The study was initiated at farming systems research and development (FSRD) site, Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 with one small farmer having land ownership of 235 decimal with irrigation facilities and a homestead under single ownership. Accounting of pre- intervention status: A case study was conducted on the selected farmer to assess his resource base, asset and liabilities, potentials for improvement, technology practiced, level of input use and output obtained, income and expenditure status, labour availability of the farm, etc. Selection of technologies for intervention: The scope for improvement identified in the case study was discussed with the co-operator farmer. On the basis of the discussion several alternatives of technologies were recommended for intervention to each of the resources available to the farm. Motivation and final selection of technologies: In this step some motivational tools were used (like demonstration of results of candidate technologies) so that farmer could evaluate the technologies in respect of costs, benefits, marketing and risk. Finally number of options for technological interventions was formulated in participation with the farmer. Implementation of intervention: Before implementation of the intervention, the cooperator farmer was trained on the production packages of the technologies. The technologies were then applied to the farm resources. Performance of the technologies was continuously monitored, relevant data and farmer reactions were recorded. Data analysis and reporting: The collected data were edited, summarized and presented in tabular form for reporting. The data were analyzed using simple statistical tools considering cost and benefits, financial balance, liabilities and net worth of the farmer from all components compared with previous year's performance. In calculating cost and benefit farm gate price of input and output was taken into account. Marginal benefit cost ratio (MBeR) was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

The intervention of technologies brought out a significant growth in gross return and gross margin of the farm family as a whole. The gross margin from crop, homestead, livestock, fishery sub- sectors was increased in the study period. The family income, resource use, knowledge in modern agriculture and microenvironment like proper plantation, organized decomposition of farm and household residues etc. were improved considerably due to intervention. Though marginal benefit from the homestead sub-sector was found highest but there is also enough scope for further improvement. Establishment of broiler farm, local and exotic poultry breeds under traditional rearing, improved breed of duck, pigeon rearing, introducing quick growing multipurpose tree species in homestead, commercial plant nursery etc. can be able to further increase of return from homestead sub-sector. This integrated approach is successful for the small farmers to utilize farm resources and to increase their farm income. The development of technologies is an on-going process. Continuous support and supervision is needed by government and non-government extension services to inform the message of new technologies and its adoption considering the resource availability of the farmer.
