Farmers' Attitude Towards Judicious Use of Agro-chemicals in Crop Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objectives of the study were to determine the farmers' extent of attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals as well as to explore its relationships with their selected characteristics. Data were collected from 302 farm family heads of 9 villages of Kumargata union under Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh district following double-stage sampling technique. It was found that 45.4 percent of the farmers had un favourable attitude, 27.5 percent had moderate attitude and 27.1 percent had favourable attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals respectively. Education, family education, family size. knowledge on agro-chernicals use. information sources use, farm size. annual income, use of agricultural credit, level of fertilizer use. economic status, social participation, cosmopoliteness, opinionatedness, innovativeness, level of aspiration, self- confidence, dynamism, agricultural problem awareness, environmental pollution awareness and risk orientation had positive relationships with attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals, On the other hand, age, direct participation in farming and fatalism had negative relationships.

Objectives:

1. To determine the farmers' extent of attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals as well as to explore its relationships with their selected characteristics.

Methodology:

Kumargata union of Muktagacha upazila under Mymensingh district was selected as the study area. Data were collected from 302 farm family heads of 9 villages of Kumargata union following double-stage sampling technique during January to May, 1998 with the help of interview schedule. In order to measure the farmers' attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals a five point Likert scale was used. The scale consisted of 12 statements reflecting positive and negative feelings of the farmers towards judicious use of agro- chemicals. The respondents were asked to indicate their opinion whether they strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree and strongly disagree with the statements. A weight of 5, 4, 3, 2 and I was given for the positive statements. However, the weighting system was reversed for the negative statements. The total score of each farmer was obtained by summing his scores for the individual statement. However, computed attitude scores ranged from 12 to 60. On the basis of attitude score, farmers were classified into unfavourable attitude (score of 12-33), moderate attitude (score of 34-47) and favourable attitude (score 48-60) categories. In order to find out the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers with their attitude towards judicious use of agro- chemicals, a zero-order correlation analysis was done.

Achievement/Findings:

The study discloses that nearly half (45.4 percent) of the farmers in the study area had un favourable attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals whereas 27.5 percent and 27.1 percent farmers had moderate and favourable attitude towards judicious use of agro-chernicals respectively. Hence, overall situation in the study area regarding judicious use of agro-chemicals is not so satisfactory. Due attention may, therefore, be given on certain characteristics namely, education, family education, family size, direct participation in farming, knowledge on agro- chemicals use, information sources use, use of innovativeness, fatalism, level of aspiration, self- confidence, dynamism, agricultural problem awareness, environmental pollution awareness and risk orientation. These variables were significantly correlated with farmers' attitude towards judicious use of agro-chemicals. Hence, before undertaking any massive training and motivational programme on judicious use of agro-chemicals, environmental pollution and sustainable agricultural development etc. by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) as well as other relevant GOs and NGOs working for the farmers, the concerned policy makers should give due cognizance of these facts.
