The study was primarily aimed at determining the credit use efficiency of BRAC vegetable cultivation program. Data were collected from randomly selected sample of ~oo women vegetable growers from 200 women participants in 31 village organizations (VOs) in RDP areas of BRAe. Credit use efficiency of vegetable cultivation program by the vegetable growers women of BRAC was the dependent variable of the study and was measured by the amount of credit utilized by the respondents in vegetable cultivation against the total credit money received and was expressed in terms of percentage. Age. education, family labour force, farm size, potential vegetable land, family income, vegetable cultivation knowledge, length of involvement and fulfilment of expectation were the independent variables of the study. Majority (73%) of the respondents were found to be categorized as very low user of the credit for vegetable cultivation purposes. Shop installation, purchasing rickshaw, leasing land, buying tin, marriage ceremony of daughter, irrigating land etc. were found to be the most common purpose for loan utilization. Regarding correlation among the variable concerned, it was found that, age and family income were found negatively related and fulfillment of expectation was found significantly correlated with credit utilization. The other variables did not have any relationship with credit utilization.

1. The study was primarily aimed at determining the credit use efficiency of BRAC vegetable cultivation program.

This study was conducted at the RDP (Rural Development Program) area of BRAC, Shambhuganj, Mymensingh. Data were collected from randomly selected sample of 100 women vegetable growers from 200 women participants in 31 village organization (VOs). The sample was selected by using a table of random numbers. A sample frame was prepared alphabetically before taking the samples. The instrument for data collection was prepared based on the objectives of the study. In order to collect valid and reliable information (Anderson, 1990), the instrument was pre-tested and final version of the schedule was prepared based on the amendment of the pre-tested schedule. Data collection was done through face to face interview during 1- 30 November 1997. Credit use efficiency of vegetable cultivation program by the vegetable growers women of BRAC was the dependent variable of the study and was measured by the amount of credit utilized by a respondent in vegetable cultivation and it was expressed in terms of percentage of the total amount of credit received from BRAe. The percentage figure was considered as the actual amount of credit utilized on vegetable cultivation program.Age of the respondents were measured in terms of complete years. Education was measured in terms of number of year of formal schooling completed by the respondents. Family labour force was measured by the number of person(s) in a family who have attained an age of 10 or more and could give labour for the family. Farm size was measured in terms of decimal and was calculated by sum of the area of own land cultivated by the respondents and area taken on lease from others and half of the area given to others on borga and half of the area taken as borga from others. Potential vegetable land was computed based on the area of land suitable for vegetable cultivation. Family income was measured in Taka and was calculated on the basis of earnings by members of the family from different sources in a year e.g. agriculture, business, service and others. Vegetable cultivation knowledge was measured by asking 25 questions in different aspects of vegetable cultivation where 0 was assigned for wrong answer and 2 for right answer. A respondent could get 0 for all wrong answer while 50 for all right answers. Length of involvement was measured in terms of complete years. Fulfillment of expectations was measured by asking the respondent to what extent their expectations were fulfilled along a 4 point scale: not fulfilled, poorly fulfilled, moderately fulfilled and highly fulfilled and these responses were computed on the basis of scored as 0,1,2 and 3 respectively.

BRAC has now been launching dozens of program in the name of people's welfare e.g. income generating activities, poverty alleviation, women empowerment, eradication of illiteracy, environmental awareness and so on. In this study, a part of it program has been studied. The cultivation of vegetable by the BRAC's beneficiaries aims at providing nutrition to the rural people through adequate consumption of vegetables. But in fact, only few of them are doing so, the majority of them utilize the credit for other purpose. Although BRAC's field workers are very much alert and frequently make follow up visit to those who have taken loans in order to make sure that loans are properly utilized. But in this particular circumstances, it was observed that, the beneficiaries were randomly doing unscheduled works with BRAC's loan as opposed to vegetable cultivation purposes and the field workers did not take any action against them. From this viewpoint it may be concluded that the BRAC's main objective is not bring welfare of the people rather they are investing money by giving loans to its beneficiaries and making money through high rate of interest which they are supposed to pay by weekly/monthly installment. Therefore, it is a complete business oriented package running by BRAe throughout the whole country in the name of credit for vegetable program.
