Participation of Women Beneficiaries in the Population Education and Family Planning Activities in Rdrs

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objectives of the study were i) to determine and describe the nature and extent of participation of the women beneficiaries of the Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Services (RDRS) projects in the population education and family planning activities ii) to determine and describe the selected individual characteristics of the women beneficiaries of the RDRS and iii) to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the women and their participation in population education and family planning activities. Data were collected from a randomly selected sample of J 20 women beneficiaries of Pirgonj Upazila under Thakurgaon District by using interview schedule. Slightly less than three-fifths (56.67 percent) of the respondents had medium participation in population education and family planning activities, as compared to 16.66 percent high and 26.67 percent low. Age, education, family size. family farm size. family income. cosmopoliteness, agricultural knowledge and innovativeness of the women beneficiaries had significant relationships with their participation in the population education and family planning activities.

Objectives:

1. To determine and describe the nature and extent of women participation in population education and family planning activities, 2. To determine and describe the selected personal, social, economic and psychological characteristics of women. 3. To explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the women and their participation in population education and family planning activities.

Methodology:

Locale of the study - Three Unions, namely Pirgonj, Syedpur and Daulatpur of Pirgonj Upazila under Thakurgaon District were selected as the locale of research where most of RDRS' activities are. concentrated. Population, Sample and Sampling procedure - Beneficiaries of RDRS of the three selected Unions were considered as the population of the study. Total number of groups in these unions was 80 and total number of women in these groups was 399. Firstly, 30 per cent of the groups (known as 'Dol') were randomly selected from each union, secondly, 30 per cent of the group members were randomly selected from each group. Finally, 120 members were selected from 24 groups by using random number that constituted the sample of the study. Data were collected in September 2000 by interviewing the sampled women using interview schedules. Variables and their Measurement: Dependent variable - Extent of participation of the women beneficiaries in the population education and family planning activities was the dependent variable of the study. It was measured by using a three point Likert-type scale. Each respondent was asked to indicate the extent of their participation in each of the 14 activities relating to population education and family planning by checking anyone of the three responses - never doing, occasionally doing and regularly doing. The weights assigned to these three responses were 0, I and 2 respectively. Independent variables - Selected characteristics of the respondents were considered as the independent variables of the study and were measured by computing appropriate scores. The characteristics were measured either by using raw scores or through rated scores.

Achievement/Findings:

The RDRS should not concentrate its activities within the target areas or inside the classroom or around the homestead only. It should try to orient the women with various development projects outside their social system. It would be valuable to introduce the women with some other women who have been benefited by managing their family size up to an acceptable level. This real experience might be valuable to motivate the women to participate more in the population education and family planning activities.
