Information Sources Used by Farmers Regarding the Use of Agro-chemicals

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study focuses on the extent of use of information sources by the farmers in using agro- chemicals. Data were collected from nine villages of Kumargata union of Muktagacha Upazila under Mymensingh district following double-stage sampling technique during 01 January to 31 May, 1998 from a sample of 300 farm family heads. The extent of use of information sources by the farmers was determined by using a 5 point scale. More than half (59.3%) of the farmers had medium use compared to 34.8% low and only 5.9% high use of information sources. Information source use index indicates that "family member" was the most Frequently used information source followed by "friends and neighbours" and "relatives". On the other hand, "magazine" was the least frequently used information source. The finding reveals that among the four groups of information sources e.g. mass media, group media, personal cosmopolite and personal localite, the personal localite group of information sources was the most frequently used source.

Objectives:

1. The present work was undertaken with a objective to determine extent of use of different information sources regarding the use of agro-chemicals.

Methodology:

The empirical data were collected through personal interviewing during 01 January to 31 May 1998 from a sample of 302 farm family heads from 9 villages of Kumargata Union of Muktagacha Upazila under Mymensingh district following double-stage sampling technique. Information sources used by a farmer operationalized on the basis of the extent of one's use of 21 information sources. A five-point Likert- Scale was used to measure the use of information sources. The respondent farmers were asked to indicate whether their use of information sources were either 'most often', 'often', 'sometimes', 'rarely' or 'never' with a score of 4, 3, 2, I and 0 respectively for each of the selected 21 information sources. The information sources use score for each respondent farmer could thus vary from 0 to 84, zero indicating 'no use of the information sources' and 84 'very high use of the information sources'. However, frequency counts of responses were also recorded to compute the information sources use index (ISUI) of the farmers for each of the information source. The ISUI for each information source was computed by using the following formula: ISUI = NJ x 4 + N2 X 3 + N3 X 2 + N4 X I + Ns x 0 Where, ISUI = Information sources use index. NJ = Number of farmers most-often using information sources. N2 = Number of farmers often using information sources. N3 = Number of farmers sometimes using information sources. N4 = Number of farmers rarely using information sources. Ns = Number of farmers never using information sources. The ISUI for each information source could range from 0 to 1208, zero indicating the information source not at all used by the farmers and 1208 indicate very high use of the information source.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings demonstrate that most of the farmers had low to medium use of information sources regarding the agro-chemicals use. The above facts lead to the conclusion that the farmers from low to medium information sources used categories need motivational training on judicious use of agro-chemicals for' achieving sustainable agricultural development.
