Rural Couples and Their Understanding on Adoption of Birth Control Measures

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objective or the study was to determine the adoption of birth control methods by the rural couples depending on their children number. Further, it explored the relationships or selected characteristics of the rural couples with their children number in adopting the birth control methods. Data were collected from 112 randomly selected rural couples of BALIEC villages under Sadar Upzila of Mymensingh district through personal interview. Findings indicate that age, family size, farm size were positively related and major occupation, birth control knowledge were negatively related with their child number in adopting the birth control methods. There were no relationship between the education, assets, annual income, organizational participation, extension contact, cosmopoliteness and fatalism with the dependent variable.

Objectives:

1. To determine the extent of adoption of overall birth control methods depending on the children number per couple, and 2. To explore the relationships between the couples children number and their selected characteristics.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in eight (8) villages of BAUEC women society under Mymensingh Sadar upazila. There were 320 couples who constituted the population out of which 112 couples were selected randomly as sample for this study. Data were collected from 15 January 2000 to 28 February, 2000 through personal interviews. Children number in adopting the birth control methods was the dependent variable for this study. Adoption of birth control methods was measured in percentage depending on the standard children number of Bangladesh per couple and actual children number per couple. The standard number was considered 2 in the context of Bangladesh. First, the adoption score for each couple was determiner dividing the standard children number by the actual children number and then multiplied by 100 to express in percentage. Thus, the adoption scores for I 12 couples were computed separately. Then the average of the computed scores indicated the adoption of birth control methods. It was measured by the following formula: Children ration = (Standard children number per couple/Actual children number per couple) x 100. Hence, it could range from 0 to 200, where 0 indicates no adoption and 200 indicates very high adoption.

Achievement/Findings:

By the use of birth control methods, it was possible to get limited children in the study area. With few children, it becomes possible to maintain family with more care and proper guidance. The adoption of farnily planning has great potentiality to decrease the rapid fertility rate and the rampant growth of population. Age was positively and significantly related to the children number. These findings lead to conclude that different kinds of family planning programmes should be launched for the eligible couples to have better understanding about birth control and standard children number, so that with the increase of age, they have limited children.
