Delineation of Areas Having Water Shortage During Boro Rice Cultivation in Northwest Bangladesh: Rajshahi Region-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field survey has been conducted by pre-structured questionnaire in Mugrul village in Mohanpur Upazilla of Rajshahi district. Information about 10 STWs was surveyed of Upazilla to identify STW areas which face water scarcity during Boro season, to estimate duration of water shortage, and to assess the possibility of shifting Boro to Braus/Aus.These STWs were found deep set and very deep set up to 5 to 20 feet below the ground surface. Cropping pattern of the selected areas has been changed due to scarcity of irrigation water. Groundwater level is decreasing as a result non rice crops like maize, potato and wheat cultivated areas are increasing day by day instead of rice. In this location contains an aquifer in shallow depth.Water level is 21 feet below the soil surface during monitoring period (June/2014). In the surveyed area, boro rice is not cultivated from the beginning. So water level is relatively high compared to other locations of the Upazilla. Static water level is lowering from December to May upto 70 feet from soil surface. Water level is starting to recharge from June to November. In this time maximum water level is found at 28 feet. During 2013-14, boro rice area was decreased by 8.42% compared to 2012-13. But it was same during 2011-12. Non-rice crops are occupied by high land and boro rice is cultivated in low land in this upazilla. Non-rice crop like maize cultivation is popular day by day due to scarcity of water. Maize cultivation area has been increased by 42.9 % and 52.9 % in 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively compared to the year 2011-12. T. Aus crop has been cultivated in 6100 ha area in the year 2013. But, in 2014, the cultivation area has been decreased to only 32 ha. This was occurred due to insufficient rainfall during the cultivation period. On the other hand, BMDA deep-tube well did not operate during T. Aus season in this Upazilla.
