The main purpose of this study was to assess the perception of women on the appropriateness of homestead farming technologies. The relationships between selected characteristics of the women and their perception of appropriateness of technology was also explored. Out of 1135 women of Palima and Sreepur, 200 were selected randomly and data were collected by using a structured interview schedule. The appropriateness of technology was measured in respect to relative advantage, compatibility, production increase, utilization of local resources and self-sufficiency in household requirement of the technology users. Out of the total of 78 technologies identified earlier, 24 were perceived as appropriate for homestead farming. Although majority of the technologies were traditional in nature but 85 percent of the women perceived the technologies as medium to highly appropriate for homestead farming. The perception of appropriateness of technology was related with the level of education, farm size, income from homestead, farming facilities, communication exposure and participation in homestead farming activities of the women. The extension providers should strengthen extension activities to increase knowledge and understanding of the women for assessing the appropriateness of technologies.

1. Examine the perception of the women on appropriateness of technologies being used in homestead farming, and 2. Explore relationship between perception of appropriateness of technology and the selected characteristics of the women. The selected characteristics were: age, level of education, farm size, homestead income, communication exposure, farming facilities and participation in homestead farming by the women.

The women actively involved in homestead farming of the Farming Systems Research and Development Programme (FSRDP) site of Palima under Kalihati of Tangail district and non- FSRDP site of Sreepur under Sreepur of Gazipur district were the population of the study. Sampling design and data collection - One hundred women out of 607 farm families of Palima and 100 women from 528 farm families of Sreepur were selected following stratified random sampling procedure. Structured interview schedule was used to collect data through face to face interviewing. Data were collected during November 1998 to February 1999. Measurement of dependent variable - Perception as the process whereby an individual receives stimuli through the various senses and interprets them. Gibson further opined that in functional terms, perception is the process by which one obtains the first hand information about the world around him. Thus, perception is the process by which an individual feel about an object. The perception of women on the appropriateness of technology was the dependent variable of the study. It was measured by using 5 indicators of appropriateness of technology, such as, relative advantage, compatibility, production increase, utilization of local resources and self-sufficiency in household requirement due to adoption of a technology. The procedure followed for defining and measuring the variable is as follows: of suitability of a technology for application by women in her farming situation with the help of available resources. Relative advantage: It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as better than the idea it supersedes. Compatibility: It is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being consistent with the existing values, past experiences, and needs of potential adopters. An idea that is not compatible with the prevalent values and norms of social system will not be adopted as rapidly as an innovation that is compatible. Production increase: It means the degree of improvement of farm output from a lower state to higher state due to some intervention in the production system. Utilization of local resources: It refers to the degree of utilization of available local resources during the application of a technology in the homestead farming. Self sufficiency in household requirement: It means the technological intervention in the farm that improves the rate of consumption, selling and distribution of farm production to a significant extent. The perception of appropriateness of a technology was measured on the basis of opinion of the women regarding the characteristics of a technology such as relative advantage, compatibility (knowledge and skills), utilization of local resources, increase of production and self sufficiency in household requirement. The extent of appropriateness of the technologies as perceived by the women was determined by using a 3 point scale against each of the 5 characteristics of 78 technologies. Weights were assigned to each of the scale such as 2 for 'sufficient' I for 'somewhat' and o for 'not at all'. The relative advantage sub-score of a respondent against 78 technologies was calculated by adding all the weights of her responses together. Similar procedure was used to calculate other sub-scores of 78 technologies.

Among the characteristics of women; the level of education, farm size, income from homestead, farming facilities, communication exposure and participation in homestead farming activities were found related with their perception to appropriateness of homestead farming technologies. This means that these characteristics may help to improve the knowledge and understanding to assess the appropriateness of homestead farming technologies used by the women
