Factors Responsible for Determining Communication Behaviour of the Block Supervisors

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study focuses the communication behavior of the Block Supervisors (BSs) working in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) main objective WhS to explore tne selected characteristics of the BSs with their communication behaviour. Data were collected during 04 June to 24 October 2000 from 658 extension agents (329 of each of the male and female BSs) or 26 districts. Factor analysis was employed in order to find out the factors determining the communication' behaviour of the Block Supervisors. Prior to run the factor analysis correlation co- efficients was employed between the variables. The findings reveal that your factor patterns have been extracted which interpreted 47.4 percent of the variance in the communication behaviour of the Block Supervisors. The factors include: (i) job satisfaction and communication, (ii) need for information and job importance, (iii) time use and supervisor relation, and (iv) attitude of the Block Supervisors towards local organizations.

Seven Field Investigator" collected data for this study. An intensive training was given to the Investigators on various aspects of data collection before sending them for fieldwork. The collection of data took about 5 months starting from 4 June to 24 October 2000. Communication behaviour of the Block Supervisors was the dependent variable of the study. This was measured by using scales on (a) personal information input pattern, (b) mass media information input pattern, (c) information processing pattern, and (d) information feedback pattern. The scores for communication behaviour pattern were computed by adding the scores for these four information patterns. Nineteen selected characteristics of the Block Supervisors were considered as the independent variables of the study. The independent variables were measured either by using raw scores, or rated scores.

Achievement/Findings:

The communication behaviour of the Block Supervisors had significant positive correlations with their training need, time use, supervisor relation, contact with higher officials, feeling of job importance, attitude, towards NGOs, job satisfaction, information input pattern, mass media information input pattern, information processing pattern, and information feedback pattern. It had, however, significant negative correlations with the contact with local organizations of the Block Supervisors. The Communication behaviour of the BSs was related to 4 major factors. The factors are: (I) job satisfaction and communication, (2) need for information and job importance, (3) time use and supervisor relation, and (4) attitude. Based on the findings of the study it may be concluded that communication behaviour of the Block Supervisors working in the DAE cannot be improved unless arrangements are made for job satisfaction of the BSs, their relationships with their supervisors are improved, and their attitude towards NGOs is changed favourably. Time use by the BSs and their feeling of job importance are also important factors for effective communication behaviour. 'Me concerned administrators and policy makers may need to give due cognizance of these facts in order to increase the communication behaviour of the Block Supervisors working in the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
