For determining the effect of source-sink manipulation on some important grain characters of rice, two experiments were conducted at the farms of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. A total of fifteen and nine varieties during T.Aman and Boro 2004-05 seasons, respectively were transplanted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The interaction of mean squares for defoliation of flag leaf and removal of grains on grains per panicle and yield per panicle in T.Aman and grains per panicle in Boro season were found significant. A range of -33.3% to -1.9%, -7.31% to 0.00%, -20.22 % to -1.34% and -30.83 % to +3.55 % changes in grains per panicle, 100 grain weight, yield per panicle and seed germination (%) were observed respectively due to flag leaf defoliation. Similarly, -12.7% to +33.9%, +7.55 % to -3.54 %, +25.00% to +1.38% and -22.14% to +4.53% changes were observed due to removal of 50% spikelets per panicle. Finally, it was observed that reduction of source caused the decrease in sink characters, but removal of spikelets (sink) caused increase in 100 grain weight as well as yield.

To study the effect of source-sink manipulation on some important grain characters of rice.

Two experiments were conducted at the farms of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur. A total of fifteen and nine varieties during T.Aman and Boro 2004-05 seasons, respectively were transplanted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.4 m X 2 m with spacing of 20 cm between both the rows and plants, respectively. Source was manipulated by defoliation of leaf and sink by removing of immature grain (spikelets) both at anthesis time. There were four treatments in source-sink manipulation: To = Control, T1 = Defoliation of flag leaf, T2 = Defoliation of flag leaf and penultimate leaf (only in Boro season) and T3 = Removal of 50% spikelets per panicle. For sink manipulation almost every alternate spikelet from each panicle was removed by cutting with scissor. Five sample plants for each treatment and control were randomly selected from each of the plot for manipulation and data were collected on important sink characters, viz. grains per panicle, 100 grain weight, yield per panicle and germination percentage of seed. The manipulated grain characters were analyzed for variance to determine the effect of source and sink manipulations.

The analysis of variance for effects of flag leaf defoliation and removal of 50 % spikelet per panicle on grains per panicle, 100 grain weight, yield per panicle and seed germination (%) showed highly significant deference except seed germination during T. Aman 2004. The interaction of mean squares for source-sink manipulation on grains per panicle and yield per panicle in T. Aman and grains per panicle in Boro season was found significant. In T.Aman season, significant changes in grains per panicle, 100 grain weight and yield per panicle in BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan38 for defoliation of flag leaf and in BR11, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 for removal of 50% spikelet per panicle were observed. Similarly, in Boro season significant changes in BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan35 for leaf defoliation and in BR3, BR14 and BRRI dhan35 for removal of spikelets per panicle were observed. Finally, it was observed that reduction of source caused the decrease in different important sink characters. Removal of spikelets on the other hand, caused increase in 100 grain weight as well as yield.
