An experiment was conducted with a total of thirty-six accessions of traditional (local) duplicate named Boro rice germplasm during 2004 season at BRRI farm to study on morphological variations and correlations between yield and yield components. A total of twelve morph-agronomic characters were studied which showed statistically significant differences except filled grain number per panicle and harvest index. The seedling height, tiller number per hill, days to fifty percent flowering, plant height, flag leaf area, panicle number per hill, panicle length, grain length, 1000-grain weight, harvest index and yield were found with a range of 23.95 to 16.67 cm, 21 to 9, 116 to 100 days, 125.6 to 70.3 cm, 34.88 to 18.77 cm2, 19 to 9, 26.45 to 18.38 cm, 8.57 to 7.14 mm, 23.04 to 18.13 g, 0.40 to 0.21 and 9.88 to 3.94 g, respectively in spites of having similar names. Character association analyses revealed that plant height and harvest index have positive correlation with grain yield indicating tall nature of traditional rice plant. However, the yield has positive correlation with all the characters studied except grain length. The path analysis revealed that the highest positive direct effect on grain yield was observed in panicle number per hill (0.767) followed by harvest index (0.491), plant height (0.328), days to fifty percent flowering (0.308) and grain length (0.281). Finally, the correlation and path analysis showed that panicle number per hill, harvest index, filled grain number per hill and 1000-grain weight were the most important characters for selection of traditional rice.

  • To explore more information on morphological variations and correlations between yield and yield components in duplicate named indigenous Boro rice accessions.

An experiment was conducted during 2004 season at BRRI farm to study on morphological variations and correlations between yield and yield components in rice accessions that have same name but collected from different places of Bangladesh. For this, a total of thirty-six accessions of traditional (local) duplicate named indigenous Boro rice germplasm of three different groups in which 4 Tepi Boro viz. Tepi Boro (258)(Mymensingh) (name, accession number and place of collection), Tepi Boro (930)(Sylhet), Tepi Boro (3998)(Habiganj), Tepi Boro (4526)(Sunamganj), 12  Jagli Boro viz. Jagli Boro (255)(Mymensingh), Jagli Boro (256)(Mymensingh), Jagli (645)(Noakhali), Jagli (1704)(Faridpur), Jagli (1705)(Faridpur), Jagli (1761), Jagli (1806)(Kishorganj), Jagli (2253)(Kishorganj), Jagli Boro (3677)(Mymensingh), Jagli Boro (4521)(Sunamganj), Jagli Boro (4536)(Habiganj), Jagli (4553)(Netrakona) and 20 Kali Boro viz. Kali Boro (260)(Mymensingh), Kali Boro (735)(Comilla), Kali Boro (1281), Kali Boro (1707)(Faridpur), Kali Boro 2/2 (2189), Kali Boro 41/1 (2192), Kali Boro 80/3 (2194), Kali Boro 109/4 (2196), Kali Boro 139/2 (2198), Kali Boro-200 (2200), Kali Boro-259 (2201), Kali Boro-576 (2203), Kali Boro-600 (2204), Kali Boro-704 (2205), Boro 6/2 (2206), Boro 9/2 (2207), Boro 10/3 (2208), Boro 13/2 (2209), Boro 15/1 (2210), Kali Boro (4581)(Tangail) were used. The genotypes were grown under transplanted condition with four replications using single row of 5.4 m long each per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha. Control measures for pest, disease and weed were taken whenever necessary.

The data were collected from individual plant for seedling height (cm), days to fifty percent flowering, tiller number per hill, panicle number per hill, panicle length (cm), plant height (cm), 1000-grain weight (g), flag leaf area (cm2), filled grains per panicle, grain length (mm), harvest index and grain yield/hill (g). The correlation coefficient was performed following Singh and Choudhury (1985). Path coefficient analysis was estimated according to the method suggested by Dewey and Lu (1959).

A total of twelve morpho-agronomic characters were studied which showed statistically significant differences except filled grain number per panicle and harvest index. The mean performance of the genotypes showed wide range of variations. The potential genotypes were identified as for seedling height-acc. no. 2205, tiller number per hill-acc. no. 7281, panicle number per hill-acc. no. 7281 and grain yield per hill-acc. no. 1707, respectively. The character association analysis revealed that the yield had positive correlation with all the characters studied except grain length. However, the plant height had significant positive correlation with seedling height and flag leaf area and positive correlation with grain yield and panicle length but negative correlation with rest of the characters. The direct and indirect effects of yield contributing characters showed that panicle number per hill (0.767) exhibited the highest positive direct effect on grain yield followed by harvest index (0.491), plant height (0.328), days to fifty percent flowering (0.308) and grain length (0.281), respectively.
