A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur in T. Aman season 1994 with four T. Aman rice varieties, Nizersail, BR22, Pajam and BR25 to evaluate the N response pattern. Six N doses-  0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg/ha were tested in a split-plot design with three replications.  Nitrogen fertilization increased the grain yield significantly in all the varieties. The response of rice varieties to applied N was quadratic except for BR22 which responded linearly with N rates. The equations explained more than 90% yield variability. Nizersail responded up to 30 kg N/ha, BR22 up to 150 kg N/ha, Pajam up to 120 kg N/ha and BR25 responded significantly up to 60 kg N/ha. The c-coefficient in all the varieties was 0.0001 or less and b-coefficient was the highest (0.0329) in BR25 and the lowest (0.018) in Nizersail. The optimum N rate rate for Nizer Sail was 92 kg/ha; BR22 182 kg; Pajam 200 kg; and BR25 118 kg. Total N uptake was the highest in Pajam at N150. The N use efficiency of BR22 and BR25 was about 30-50% higher than that of traditional Nizersail and Pajam. The apparent recovery of added N was 40% for BR22 and BR25 and 24% for Pajam and 34% for Nizersail at 30 kg/ha. In N response pattern and agronomic efficiency, BR25 was the best among the studied varieties.

  • To evaluate the nitrogen (N) response patterns of four T. Aman rice varieties.

A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur during T. Aman season 1994 to evaluate the N response pattern of four rice varieties (Nizersail, BR22, Pajam and BR25). The varieties, BR22 and, BR25 are improved plant type of Nizersail and Pajam, respectively. Six levels of N (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg/ha) were used. Soil of the experimental field was clay with pH 6.6, organic matter 2.17% and total N 0.11%. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with variety in the main plots and N rates in the subplots. All plots received a basal blanket application of P, K and S at the rate of 25, 35 and 20 kg/ha, respectively. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied into 3 splits. Two to three rice seedling/hill were transplanted at 20 x 20 cm spacing. The crop was harvested from 5 m2 area at the center of each plot and rice grain weight was adjusted to 14% content. The relationship between N doses and grain yield could be expressed by the quadratic equation- Y = a + bx + cx2 where, Y = yield of rice (t/ha), x = N doses (kg/ha). The N rates for maximum rice yield was calculated by differentiating the regression equation, when dy/dx = 0, the expected optimum N rates for maximum yield was calculated by the equation, Nmax = -b/2c. Data on agronomic efficiency of N (kg grain/kg applied N), N uptake (kg/ha) and N recovery (%) were recorded.

Grain yield increased significantly due to N fertilization in all the varieties. While Nizersail responded significantly up to 30 kg N/ha, its improved plat type BR22 responded significantly up to 150 kg N/ha. Nizersail gave additional grain yield benefit of 0.6 to 1.0 t/ha over control due to n fertilization. In all rates of added N, BR22 gave higher grain yield over Nizersail, but difference between these two varieties was significant at 120 kg and 150 kg N/ha. Pajam responded significantly up to 120 kg N/ha while its improved plant type BR25 responded significantly up to 60 kg N/ha. The variety BR25 out yielded Pajam with and without added N, but difference between the varieties was significant at 60 kg N/ha only. Pajam gave additional grain yield benefit of 0.7 to 1.8 t/ha over control whereas its improved plant type BR25 gave additional grain yield benefit of 0.8 to 2.0 t/ha over control due to N fertilization. Among the tested varieties BR25 out yielded all the varieties with or without added N. The grain yield of each variety increased quadratically except BR22 which responded linearly
