Farmers' Use of Information Sources Related to Cultivation of Modern Variety of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to identify the information sources used by the farmers of Kapasia Sadar Union of Gazipur Distirct. Data were collected during January- February. 1998 from 130 farmers of three selected villages. Extent of use of information sources were computed by Source Use Index (SUI). To test the relationship between respondents' characteristics and their overall sur, correlation test was used. eighbors. Result Demonstration, Block Supervisors, Bangladesh Betar and Tea Stall came out as the first five effective sources of information in producing HYV rice. As per classification of different information sources on their extent of use, the individual source ranked first and was followed by group and mass sources. Farming experience of the respondent showed negative relationship with their use of information sources; however, education, farm size and annual income had positive relationship with their use of information sources.

Objectives:

I. To dctcrrni ne the extent of use of different information sources by farmers in producing HYV rice, and 2. To explore relationship between the selected characteristics of farmers and their extent of use of information sources in producing HYV rice. The characteristics were: age, education, farrni ng experience, farm size, annual income, organizational participation and cos mopoli teness.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the villages of Dasshu Naraynpur, Banar Hawla and Jamirar Char. Total number of HYV rice farmers in these villages were 232, 147 and 99, respecti vel y. One hundred and thirty HYV rice farmers were selected from the population through systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected by the researcher himself by using an interview schedule. Statistical measures like frequency counts, mean, rank order and coefficient of correlation were used. In this study twenty four information sources were investigated. Extent of use of information sources were measured according to the Source Use Index (SUl). Information source use of a respondent was, however, operationalised on the basis of extent of one's use of 24 information sources. A six point Likert type scale was used to measure the use of information source. The respondents were asked to indicate whether their use of information sources were very frequent, respectively for each of the selected sources. Frequency counts of responses were also recorded to compute the SUI of the respondents of each source was computed using the following formula: SUI = Nl x 5 + N2 X 4 + N3 X 3 + N4 X 2 + Ns x 1 + N x 0 Where, SUI = Source of Index Nl = Number of respondents having very frequent use of information source N2 = Number of respondents having frequent use of information source N3 = Number of respondents having seasonal use of information source N4 = Number of respondents having occasional use of information source Ns = Number of respondents having rare use of information source N6 = Number of respondents having no use of information source The SUI for each source could range from 0 to 650. Zero indicating not at all use of the frequent, seasonal, occasional, rare or not at all with a score of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 source by the farmers and 650 indicated very high use of the information source.

Achievement/Findings:

Individual information sources, such as neighbors, Block Supervisors, relatives and progressi e farmers, and group information sources such as result demonstration and mass information sources such as Bangladesh Betar were used to a considerable extent. Because from all these sources farmers' learned may new and good aspects regarding MY rice. But Krishi Katha and documentary movies were used to the lowest extent because Krishi Katha was printed material and the illiterate farmers were unable and reluctant to read these. Documentary movie ranked last because some religious barrier and faulty electricity supply.
