Effect of Different Doses of Lime (cao) on Growth of Vegetatively Propagated Cuttings of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Application of lime (CaO) in the nursery soil (pH 4.1-4.2) used for fillings polybag was made at different doses to see its effect on V.P. plants. The pH of the soil changed from 4.1 to about 4.5 over a period of 12 months. Exchangeable Ca, Mg, & K also increased in the lime treated plots than that of untreated plots. Although no significant and definite trend was obtained in respect of shoot length, root length, number of leaves, but better response was obtained with lime application than without lime. Study suggests that at the pH around 4.1 in the nursery soil, the application of lime @ 0.672gm/plant benefits V.P. plants to a great extent.

Objectives:

To see the effect of lime on the growth and vigour of V.P. plants in the nursery and its soil properties.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out at BTRI V.P. nursery and was one of the experiments of author's Ph.D. thesis work. The annual range of temperature, rainfall and humidity of the experimental area ranged from 7°-4I°C, 2280-2920 mm and 70-80% respectively (BTRI Statistics-Economics Di vision, 1987). The experimental area was an open and flat land. There was a good source of water to facilitate watering. Secondary bed was made having 1.5 meter breath and 10 meter long. The bed was slanting towards east at an inclination of 15 cm. The drain around the bed was 30 cm X 1.5 cm. A sand layer of 2 cm was spread on the bed to absorb excess water during watering. High shades of height 1.2 meter were provided to the experimental bed. The soil for filling polythene bag was collected from Bilashcherra Experimental Farm of BTRl. The soil was sandy loam. The chemical analysis of soils was done at BTRI Soil Chemistry laboratory. Eelworm counting of soils was done in Pest Management Division and found suitable for the growth of nursery plants. The soil used in polybag was sieved with 4mesh sieve and mixed thoroughly with decomposed cow dung in the ratio 3: I (soil + cow dung). The polythene bag was filled uniformly without any air pocket but leaving top 5 cm of the poly bag vacant for sub-soil. Watering was done usually to get soil settled and moist. The poly bags were kept in shade for 15 days for settling before putting the cuttings. The cuttings were collected from BT2 mother bushes of BTRI nursery. Each cutting consisted of one full leaf with stalk or about 2.5 cm. The planting was carried out on the basis of one cutting in each polybag at an angle 45° of the soil surface. Cultural operations like weeding, forking and watering were done as and when needed.

It is interesting to note that although no significant and definite trend was obtained among the treatments of lime, but better response was obtained with application of lime than without lime. Study suggests that at pH around 4.0 in the nursery soil, the application or lime to the soil benefits V.P. plants to a great extent.
