Agroforestry Systems in the Crop Field and Homestead at Bagherpara Fsr Site, Jessore

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the farming system research site, Bagherpara, Jessore to know the existing agroforestry systems in the crop fields and in the homesteads. The study revealed that there exist 22 horticultural and 16 forest species in the homesteads and 7 horticultural and 8 forest species in the crop fields. Farmers reported that trees in the crop field reduces the crop yield by 5 to 15 percent but this yield loss is substituted by the fruits, juice and wood from the trees. On an average, farmers earned an amount of Tk. 5093.00 per farm per year from the trees in the crop fields. Productivity of the existing agroforestry systems both in the homesteads and in the crop fields might be improved by replacing the existing tree species/varieties with the improved ones; planting trees in planned ways, using suitable tree - crop combinations and by improving management practices.

Objectives:

i. To document the existing agroforestry practices in the crop field and in the homestead.

ii. To know the existing management practices of the system and

iii. To know the utilities and benefits obtained out of the system.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the FSR site Bagherpara, Jessore located in the Southwest region of Bangladesh. The area falls under High Ganges River Floodplain agro-ecological region, AEZ 11a. High lands comprise about 48 percent. The soils are calcareous in nature with pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.5. The climate of the area is tropical monsoon. Long-term average rainfall of the area is 1643 mm. The rainfall is concentrated during June to September. About 70 percent of the total rainfall occurs within this period. The average minimum temperature of the area is 11.86°C, which occurs during the month of December-January. The average maximum temperature is found highest in April (34.71 °C). Sixty farm families were selected as sample farms from the total households of 825 in the FSR area with equal probability to each farm category by stratified random sampling. The selected farmers were grouped into marginal, small, medium and large farm categories according to the size of land holding. Landless farmers were not included in the study because of their limited scope of agroforestry. Information on different aspects of agroforestry was collected with the help of interview schedules during April-May, 1996. Tabular method of analysis was used in the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that there is much opportunity to improve the existing homestead and crop field agroforestry system. Most of the trees, both in the homesteads and in the crop fields are not planted in a planned way. Many forestry species like khejur, tal, babla, shimul, mandar etc. grow voluntarily without any management from the seed sources of previously grown trees. Most of the trees are traditional varieties with less productive potentials. So, there is much scope to improve productivity of the system both in the homesteads and in the fields by replacing the existing tree species/varieties with the improved ones; planting trees in planned ways, using suitable tree-crop combinations and by improving management practices.
