1. To determine the attitude of rural women towards homestead vegetable cultivation, and 2. To explore the relationships between the extents of rural women's attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation and their selected characteristics.

The study was conducted at two villages namely Mahadebpur and Nandairpara of Palsha union of Ghoraghat upazila and two village namely Balahar and Ukshipara of Chahalgazi union of Dinajpur sadar upazila under Dinajpur district. Three hundred fifty nine (3590 rural women of these four villages were the population of the study, among them 90 rural women (25.06 percent of the total population) were selected as the sample of the study by using simple random sampling. An interview schedule was prepared carefully and data were collected during 15 March to 22 March 2004. Measurement of dependent variable - The dependent variable of the study was rural women's attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation. Attitude was measured by usi ng fi ve poi nt Li kert type scale wi th 15 statements (7 positive and 8 negative) with each of the statement by answering strongly agree, agree. no opinion, disagree and strongly disagree. Scores assigned to these responses were 4, 3, 2, I and 0 respectively for the positive statements and reverse scoring for the negative statement. The attitude scores of the rural women were computed by adding her scores for all the 15 statements. Thus, the attitude score could range from 0 to 60. Statistical analysis - The data were analyzed in accordance with the objecti ves of the study. Various statistical measures such as range, mean, percentage and standard deviation were used to describe the selected characteristics of the rural women of the study area. The relationship between the selected characteristics of the rural women with their attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient (r) was used. Five percent (0.05) level of probability was used as the basis of rejecting any null hypothesis throughout the study. Tables were also used in presenting data for clarity of understanding.

Majority (51.11 percent) of rural women had moderately favourable attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation. Although most of the rural women were small farm holder, possessed low extension media contact and low cosmopoliteness behaviour, they had a cordial relationship among themselves. Thus, it can be concluded that result demonstration, group meeting, motivational campaigns, agricultural fair etc., might have contributed in increasing attitude of rural women towards homestead vegetable cultivation. Most of the rural women (58.89 percent) had secondary level academic qualification. Again, 32.22 percent of the rural women had primary level academic qualification, 4.44 percent had above secondary level academic qualification and the rest of them (4.44 percent) were illiterate. Academic qualification is generally is believed to have the effect of widening the horizon of the individual and therefore predisposes him to be new idea. Exposure to higher academic qualification helps an individual to evaluate the adverse effect of existing technology and worth of alternative technology. In the study area, an overwhelming majority (66.67 percent) of the rural women possessed small farm. Finding revealed that farm size of the rural women had a significant positive relationship with their attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation. Therefore, it can be concluded that farm size of the rural women may have important role in attitude formation towards homestead vegetable cultivation. Knowledge on homestead vegetable cultivation is the most important factor in forming favourable attitude, mental alertness, familiarity or acquaintance with fact, objects, things, practices ete. These influence a rural woman to form a favourable attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation. From the findings, it was revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between cosmopoliteness of the rural women with their attitude towards homestead vegetable cultivation. But in the study area, more than two-third of the rural women were low to medium cosmopoliteness. Many of the rural women used to go to their nearby village and upazila sadar.
