Mothers' Education Influencing Child Mortality Status in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this article, an effort is made to assess the influence of mother's education and other socio-economic and demographic factors on the child mortality in Bangladesh, using a nationally representative data collected under the direct supervision of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Descriptive statistics, chi- square and logistic regression analysis were used to fulfill the objectives of the study. The mean age of the mothers at the birth of their child was found to be 22.8 years and 51.2 percent of them were below 18 years. Nearly half (46.4%) of the mothers were illiterate or primary level and 53.6 percent had secondary and higher level of education. Eighty two percent of the respondents had given their childbirth in any medical centers. Mother's education influenced child mortality negatively in Bangladesh. Education was associated with age of the mother during childbirth, mothers' tendency of receiving antenatal care, use of hygienic drinking water, toilet facilities, and birth interval of the children. Birth place of the child, antenatal care, and vaccination influenced child mortality rate negatively where number of child born in last five years and birth interval influenced positively.

Objectives:

To determine the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of woman of reproductive age in Bangladesh. 1. To examine the relationships between mothers' education and different child care activities, 2.To examine the relationship of mother's education with decision-making process of child birth intervals, 3. To identify the socio-demographic factors those are significantly influencing child mortality status in Bangladesh, and 4. To examine the influence of mothers' education on the child mortality status in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The 1996-97 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey employed a nationally representative, two-stage sample that was selected from the Integrated Multi-Purpose Master Sample (IMPS) maintained by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BDHS 1996-97). Each of the six administrative divisions was stratified into three groups: 1) Statistical metropolitan areas (SMAs), which are the extensions of the four original division headquarters (Dhaka, Chittagong. Khulna and Rajshahi cities) 2) Municipalities (other urban areas), and 3) Rural areas. In rural areas, thanas were divided into unions and then mauzas, an administrative land unit. Urban areas were divided into wards and then mahallas. In the rural areas the primary sampling unit (PSU) was the mauza, while in urban areas, it was the mahalla. Method of data collection - Data for the study were collected from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health survey \996-97 (i.e. BDHS, 1996-97), a nationally representative survey of 9 J 27 ever married women of age 10-79 and 3312 of their husbands aged J 5-59, which was conducted under the authority of the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT) of The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Mitra and Associates, a private research firm located in Dhaka implemented the survey. Macro International Inc. of Calverton, Maryland provided technical assistance to the project as a part of its International Demographic Health Survey program, while financial assistance was provided by the US Agency for International Development (USAIDI Bangladesh).

Achievement/Findings:

In spite of gradual declining of child mortality in Bangladesh some factors are encounteri ng towards the rapid success. Mothers' education is a very important factor that influences child mortality status in Bangladesh. Mothers having higher education are likely to take different health measures compared to ill iterate or less educated mother. Educated mothers have the tendency to use hygienic source of drinking water and hygienic toilet facilities. Education of the mothers is also associated wi th the safe birth of their chi ld and birth interval. Mothers having fewer numbers of children are at lower risk of having child mortality. Mothers should get proper antenatal care, which can reduce the risk of child mortality. Education of the mother is an important factor to raise the tendency of the mothers in getting proper antenatal care. Mothers' age at birth of the child is another factor that influences the child mortality rate. It can be inferred that premature mothers are at high risk of having child mortal ity. Higher education could reduce the risk of child mortality at older period even. Thus, educational and motivational programme are necessary to reduce the chi ld mortal i ty. Tradi tional laws and regulations for the women rights may be a limiting factor in that respect. Government or concern authorities need to look af~er this matter and come forward to restrict childhood marriage.
