Agroforestry Systems in the Homesteads and Crop Fields in Two Selected Area of NARShingdi and Patuakhali District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted in Narsingdi and Patuakhali districts during 1996 to know the existing agroforestry systems in the homestead and crop fields. Tree density was observed higher in small farms than the medium and large farms. So extension services may take initiatives to increase the tree density for medium and large farmers to the extent of recommendation domain. A significant number of vegetable species were grown under the shade of the trees, which may increase the income of the farmers. Farmers training can be arranged regarding the tree and species selection, disease management, method of plantation and other aspect.

Objectives:

i. to document the tree species grown in crop field and in homestead.

ii. to understanding the existing tree management practices and

iii. to find out their uses and benefits derived from the agroforestry practices.

Methodology:

Narshingdi sadar Upzila of Narshingdi district and Patuakhali Sadar Upazila of Patuakhali district were purposively selected for the present study. This study was conducted through the Narshingdi Multilocation Testing (MLT) testing site and Patuakhali Farming Systems Research (FSR) site of On-Farm Research Division (OFRD) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute , Joydebpur, Gazipur. A pilot survey was conducted for selecting the samples in both the areas. From the result of the pilot survey, a total of 50 samples were selected randomly from Narshingdi and 65 samples from Patuakhali.

Achievement/Findings:

The dependency ratio of the farmers practicing agroforestry was observed higher in Narshingdi but lower in Patuakhali. The distribution of land was also highly unequal among the farmers under study. This may cause the poverty of the area, which is a general phenomenon in Bangladesh. Tree density was higher in small farms than the medium and large farmers. So effort may be needed to increase tree density for the medium and large farmers to the extent of recommendation domain. A significant number of vegetable species was grown under the shade of the trees, which may increase the income of the farmers. Small farmers tried to use their scarce land very effectively. Therefore, government and non-government organizations should take initiative to introduce/popularizing the agroforestry system particularly for the small ones. Thus motivating farmers to grow more trees can increase farmers additional income. The seedlings/planting materials were mainly collected from the sources of market and own supply except mahogany and jalpai. The farmers also planned to grew more trees in the near future. The extension service may take initiatives to motivate farmers in this aspect and to adopt agroforestry practices. Farmers training can also be arranged regarding tree and species selection, disease management, method of plantation and other aspects. So agroforestry practices can add new dimensions alleviating poverty in rural Bangladesh and also maintaining ecological balance of the country.
