Integrated Management of Old and Young Tea for Maximizing Crop Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rejuvenation pruning at lower height (45cm) was given to old tea bushes having nearly 50 percent or more vacant sections to invigorate the new growth. Study reveals that the crop production of old tea sections could be maximized by adopting proper rejuvenation pruning followed by infilling with good tea saplings.

Objectives:

To increase the production of old tea, due emphasis should be given to young tea management and old tea rejuvenation.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out at 3 locations one at BTRI Main farm ,another at Moulvi Tea Estate and the third one at Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet. Nurseries for both biclonal saplings and shade trees were raised before rejuvenation pruning. Old infested shade trees, dead and dying tea bushes were dug up and removed from the experimental sites.The vacant areas were deep hoed followed by improvement of drainage and levelling of ground.The drainage system was modified with the help of a level survey map .Main drains ,sub-drains and outlets were re-excavated, deepened and cleaned up properly to keep the water table below the root zone. Plucking was stopped one and a half month prior to rejuvenation pruning for increasing the starch reserve in roots. Soil samples were collected to analyze the nutrient status before rejuvenation pruning to the old tea bushes. Root reserve was tested by iodine solution. Potassium 50 kg /ha and dolomitic lime (500 kg/ha) were applied for better growth of the plants. Fertilizers NPK were applied as per BTRI recommendation. The tea bushes in all the treatments (except Tl, the control plot) were pruned at 45 cm height from the ground level in late January.The cut surface of pruned branches were properly polished with a sharp knife and pasted with bitumen paint. The frame was cleaned by hessian cloths after pruning and treated with caustic wash. The pruning litters especially the thick woody branches were removed from the section to facilitate subsequent operation and to reduce the incidence of termite. The soil and bush frame were thoroughly treated with chloropyriphos(l: 300 dilution) to avoid severe infestation of termite. Vacancies were infilled with bi- clonal saplings and replanting of shade were done in May -June to increase the stand density. The ground was mulched with green vegetative materials in order to conserve soil moisture, reduce soil erosion and add organic matter to the soil after infilling. Different formative pruning in young tea (Decentre, breaking, pegging and de-budding) were given to infilled tea plants in early February/2000.0rganic manure and fertilizers were applied to increase the soil fertility and productivity of tea bushes.
