Testing, Validation and Upscaling of Water Saving Technology in Rice Production (twst)-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to harvest and ponding of rainwater for utilization in mitigating drought affected rice; to minimize conveyance loss and increasing water use efficiency in rice production; to increase irrigated area coverage by adopting water saving technologies; and to avoid repeated priming in STW.PVC pipe water distribution system consists of main line (460 m long and 15 cm diameter), branch line (370 m long and 10 cm diameter), two gate valves at the delivery point, cap for closing outlet known as end-cap in this report, and iron bar shutter for protecting the cap against water pressure. Water was distributed in the DTW’s commend area through PVC pipe lines. Conveyance loss before and after PWDS was measured through inflow and out flow measurement. Fifteen plots from head, middle and tail portion of the DTW command area were selected for experimental purpose (5 plots of each location). A stopwatch was used for measuring the time required to wet the plots. The depth of irrigation was measured by using a vertical scale and thus the volume of water was measured by multiplying the plot area with depth of irrigation. BCR and IRR of the PWDS were determined. Conveyance loss of earthen and broken pucca canals were measured before installing the PWDS. After installation of the PWDS the conveyance loss about 30% water use efficiency was increased. The time was less to irrigate per decimal in PWDS compared to without PWDS. Average 31.6 percent time was saved for irrigating plots in PWDS compare to without PWDS. Irrigation cost saved was found from a survey that water charge per hour was Tk 120 and average 16 irrigation were received by each plot under head, middle and tail. Irrigation cost per hectare per season was Tk. 6,336, Tk. 10,290 and Tk. 11,880 under head, middle and tail, respectively without PWDS. Nevertheless irrigation cost per hectare per season was Tk. 3,960, Tk. 7,128 and Tk. 8,712 under head, middle and tail, respectively with PWDS. Before installing PWDS, irrigation coverage was only 9.9 ha during Boro season 2010-11, but after installing PWDS irrigation coverage were 11.9 ha, 14.1 ha and 21.1 ha during Boro season 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively. In 2011-12 some farmers was convinced to receive water from PWDS. Therefore, in first year irrigated area was increased by 20% (2 ha). In second year, increased irrigated area by 19 % (2.2 ha). A raised canal was constructed in third year and through which additional 7.0 ha of land was brought under PWDS. Hence, three years cumulative increased irrigated area was 11.2 ha and increased by 112 percent.The estimated NPV of the project was Tk. 6,67,733/-, which implies much higher than opportunity cost of capital and thus PWDS is highly acceptable.

After installation of the PWDS the conveyance loss was reduced and 30% water use efficiency was increased. The time was less to irrigate per decimal in PWDS compared to without PWDS (30% to 1%).Irrigation cost per hectare per season was Tk. 3,960, Tk. 7,128 and Tk. 8,712 under head, middle and tail, respectively with PWDS. After installing PWDS irrigation coverage were 11.9 ha, 14.1 ha and 21.1 ha during Boro season 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively.
