Adoption and Demonstration of Water Saving Technologies Under Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project at Farmers’ Field in BARIsal Region. Trial:demonstration of Water Management Technologies at Farmer’s Field in Aman Season-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field demonstration were conducted to mitigate terminal drought by applying supplemental irrigation; to increase rice production as well as water productivity; and to maximize rice yield by rainwater harvesting after rainfall. The study sites were in Barisal region. Two methods were followed as research management i.e. construction and maintenance of 15 cm strong levee and farmers' practice. At all locations, research management i.e. construction and maintenance of 15 cm strong levee gave higher yield (2.68 to 13.38%) compared to farmers practice where no bund was maintained. This increase in yield was due to rainwater that was harvested and conserved by the levee to meet the water demand by the plant during the critical stages. Under farmers practice yield of BRRI dhan52 ranged from 3.70 to 5.30 t/ha while under Research management the same variety gave 4.03 to 5.77 t/ha yield. The highest yield for BRRI dhan52 (5.77 t/ha) was achieved from Amtoli where rice was transplanted on 19 August and the lowest yield under research management was 4.03 t/ha harvested from Barguna sadar where rice was established after 15 days. The optimum date for transplanting of BRRI dhan52 is 20 August but at Barguna sadar rice was transplanted on 02 September. This might be the reason why Barguna sadar gave less yield compared to other locations. At Betagi upazila BR23, which is transplanted on 10 September, yielded 4.66 t/ha under farmer practice and 5.38 t/ha under research practice. The potential yield of BR23 is 5.5 t/ha and the optimum transplanting date is 15 September. Hence, yield of BR23 was similar to the potential. At Nalchiti, yield of BR11 was 4.35 t/ha under Farmer practice and 4.47 t/ha under research practice. Although BR11 was transplanted between the transplanting dates recommended by BRRI (15 July-20 August), it gave yield less than the potential (5.5 t/ha).

Methodology:

Two methods were followed as research management i.e. construction and maintenance of 15 cm strong levee and farmers' practice. BRRI dhan52, BR23 and BR11 were used as test variety. In Amtoli, BRRI dhan52 was transplanted on 19 August and in Barguna sadar BRRI dhan52 was established after 15 days. At Barguna sadar BRRI dhan52 was transplanted on 02 September. At Betagi upazila BR23 was transplanted on 10 September. About 195:60:105:68 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum was applied for BR23 and 165:60:105:68 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum was applied for BR11 and BRRI dhan52, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of field demonstrations indicated that the impact of supplemental irrigation mainly depends on rainfall distribution patterns and the last precipitation of the season. Rainwater harvesting by levee or bund management during rainfall in the farmer’s fields, mean grain yield increased by 13.99 percent in Barisal irrespective of variety. So, preparing higher levee than normal practice around the rice field to reserve rain water during rainy season is an easy and effective water management practice. The levee or bund height should be 15-20 cm and need proper maintenance from land preparation to end of the season.
