Pirojpur-gopalganj-bagerhat Integrated Agricultural Development Project (pgb-iad Project, BRRI-iwm Part). Trial: Rainwater Harvesting by Levee Management for Terminal Drought Mitigation-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field was conducted to explore the possibility of rain water harvesting for irrigating aman and to quantify the amount of rainwater conserved by maintaining levees around rice fields.Two treatments were folowed as FP= Farmers Practice (No levee management) and RM= Research Management (15 cm strong levee). Study sites were Mollahat and Fakirhat, Bagerhat district. BR11 yielded 3.86 T/ha under research management practices RM). However, under farmers practice (FP), where bund was not so good, BR11 gave 3.09 T/ha. At Fakirhat, Yield of BRRI dhan49 was 4.64 t/ha for the plot having no bund and 4.72 t/ha for the plot that had a 15 cm bund. Till/m² ranged from 190 at Mollarhat to 283 at Fakirhat. Highest number of Panicle/m² (212) was found from research management practice at Fakirhat and Lowest 168 Pan/m² was found at Mollarhat from Farmers Practice. Number of grain per panicle at Mollarhat was 129 and 131 for FP and RM respectively. Those of Fakirhat for FP and RM was 131 and 146 respectively. Thousand grain weight was highest (22.5 gm) for BR11 and Lowest (21 gm) for BRRIdhan 49.

Methodology:

Two treatments were followed as FP= Farmers Practice (No levee management) and RM= Research Management (15 cm strong levee). BR11 and BRRI dhan49 were used. The seeding date was 9/6/13 and 6/7/13 for BR11 and BRRI dhan49, respectively. The transplanting date was 10/7/13 and 5/8/13 for 9/6/13 and 6/7/13 for BR11 and BRRI dhan49, respectively.
