Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field demonstrations were conducted to document impact and cost analysis of supplemental irrigation for timely crop establishment. The water treatments were FP= Farmers Practice (No supplemental irrigation) and RM= Research Management (supplemental irrigation). Study sites were Mollahat and Fakirhat under Bagerhat district. Result shows that at Mollarhat BR11 gave 4.42 T/ha under FP. But under RM the same variety gave 3.52 T/ha. Although supplemental irrigation was not required for any of the plots, RM gave 20% less yield compared to FP. This yield reduction might be due to uneven field level. The FP plot was lower than RM plot and thus it stored more water than RM plot. Hence, FP plot yielded more than RM plot. At Fakirhat, Yield of FP was 4.21 T/ha and that of RM was 4.81 T/ha. Although no supplemental irrigation was applied, RM gave 14% more yield compared to FP. This might be due to conservation of more rain water through strong levee management. RM plot was surrounded by a strong levee and it stored more water than FP. Eventually RM gave more yield compared to FP. Under RM, Till/m² was 225 for BR11 and 283 for BRRI dhan49. BR11 gave 263 number of tiller per m² under FP and BRRI dhan49 gave 273 Till/m² under the same practice. Pan/m² ranged from 151 for BR11 to 210 for BRRI dhan49. Grain/Pan was the highest (131) for BRRI dhan49 and FP. That was the lowest (121) for the same variety under RM. Thousand grain weight ranged from 22.1 to 22.4 gm.

Two irrigation treatment were followed as tFP= Farmers Practice (No supplemental irrigation) and RM= Research Management (supplemental irrigation). BR 11 and BRRI dhan49 was used. Date of seeding was 9/6/13 and 6/7/13 for BR 11 and BRRI dhan49, respectively. Date of transplanting was 3/7/13 and 5/8/13 for BR 11 and BRRI dhan49, respectively.
