Collection Conservation and Exploitation of Land-race of Linseed in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Human can make monounsaturated fatty acids from sugar but are unable to synthesize long chain fatty acids such as linoleic acid and a-linolenic acid. the fish or fish oil is beyond the capacity of Bangladesh people. Under the circumstances linseed may be an alternative and the cheapest source of w-3 fatty acid. it changes the fat composition of meat milk, and egg when supply as a dietary supplement. It reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. therefore, students, teachers, researchers, farmers, nutritionist, feed miller and heart diseased patients etc will be benefited for the study.

Objectives:

1.To collect local landraces of linseed genotypes from different parts of Bangladesh, including Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur. 2.To study their growth and yield performance as a sole and mixed crop. 3.To study impacts of planting time on the fatty acids composition in linseed. 4.To study Ѡ-3 fatty acids levels of the collected genotypes. 5.To conserve Ѡ-3 fatty acids enriched genotypes with others or future uses.

Methodology:

To achieve the objectives stated several experiment will be carried out by appropriate experimental design: Local landraces of linseed or flaxseed will be collected from different parts of Bangladesh. It is generally cultivated during winter season at Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra, Pabna, Sherpur and Jessore districts. Seed will also be collected from relevant research organizations like BARI, Bangladesh Agriculrural Research Institute, Gazipur. Collected seeds will be sown as sole crop either broadcast or line sowing or both.
