Technology Development for Allelopathic Weed Management in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Weeds are claimed to be the greatest yield constraint in rice crop. weed growth in unweeded crops reduces yields by as much as 34% in rice, 454% in direct seeded rainfed rice and 67% in upland rice (De Datta, 1986). Karim et al. (1998) estimated that an amount of US$ 306 million is lost every year due to weed competition in rice in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

a.To study the allelopathic effects of rice varieties on the seed germination and seedling growth of barnyard grass an important weed of rice. b.To study the extend of barnyard grass suppression due to root exudates of selected allelopathic rice varieties under greenhouse and field conditions. c.To study the effects of number of land tillage time of irrigation and application of NPK fertilizers for maximum release of allelochemicals by the selected rice varieties. d.To estimate the reduction in herbicide spray and dose, and the costs for adequate weed control in the selected allelopathic rice varieties with selected technology.

Methodology:

1.First the effects of root exudates of rice cultivars on the seed germination, seedling growth of the test weed will be studied in laboratory following relay seeding technique and varieties with higher allelopathic potential will be screened out. 2.Then the rice cultivars with maximum inhibitory effects will be evaluated under greenhouse and field conditions to confirm laboratory results. 3.Experiments will be conducted in the fields to find out the appropriate number of tillage, time or irrigation and fertilizer application for maximum release of allelochemicals. 4.The effects of different doses and number of sprays of appropriate rice herbicides on the growth of barnyard grass raised in the selected allelopathic rice varieties will be studied. 5. Percent reduction in weed control cost and benefit-cost ratio due to using allelopatic rice varieties with the selected land tillage, time to irrigation and NPK application will be estimated.
