Potassium Supplying Capacity of Soils and Contribution of Crop Residue to K Supply in Some Rice Based Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur (AEZ-28, land type, MHL) in 2000-2001 to determine K supplying capacity of soils, contribution of crop residue for K nutrients in next crop and to increase K use efficiency. The test-cropping pattern was Boro (BRRI dhan29)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan39). Following treatments were tested in all seasons: T₁ = K₀ (straw remove); T₂ = K₆₆ (straw remove); T₃ = K₀ (straw retained) and T₄ = K₆₆ (straw retained). Experiment was laid out in RCBD in 3 replications. Application of K alone significantly increased grain and straw yield in Boro season and increase in grain yield due to K application was 1.05 t/ha. However in T. Aman season, K application either singly or in combination with rice straw did not influence grain yield. Application of K significantly increased the total P and K uptake. Application of rice straw alone increased K content in plant tissue. A good amount of nutrient supplied by T. Aman rice straw to the succeeding Boro crop was observed. K replenishment through chemical fertilizer was not sufficient to balance K removal by crops since much of the applied K was used by crops and some leached from soil. it may conclude that incorporation of rice straw in rice-fallow-rice cropping pattern on K deficient soils can be alternative to chemical K fertilizer (@66 kg K/ha).

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur on chhiata clay loam soil (Hyperthermic Vertic Endoaquept, AEZ-28, land type, MHL) in 2000-2001. The soil of the experimental field has clay loam texture, pH 6.03, organic carbon 1.16%, total N 0.11%, available P 9.69 ppm, and exchangeable K 0.22 meq/100g soil, available S 16 ppm and available Zn 2.69 ppm. The test-cropping pattern was Boro (BRRI dhan29) - Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan39). Following treatments were tested in all seasons: T₁ = K₀ (straw remove); T₂ = K₆₆ (straw remove); T₃ = K₀ (straw retained) and T₄ = K₆₆ (straw retained). The experiment was laid out in RCBD in 3 replications. A flat dose of N, P, and S were applied as STB. Urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.
