Dry Matter Prediction of Transplanted Rice Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to develop a model for predicting dry matter weight of rice plants at different growth stages. Two experiments were conducted, one in the Boro and another in the T. Aman season. BRRI dhan28 was used in Boro and BR22 in T. 'Aman. The dry matter weight of the rice plants at. different growth stages can be predicted as early as 60 days after transplanting (OAT) with reasonably high precision based on number of tillers per hill for transplanted rice plants.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken to develop a model for predicting dry matter weight of rice plants at different growth stages.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted, one in the Boro and another in the T. Aman season. BRRI dhan28 was used in Boro and BR22 in T. 'Aman. The plant spacing was 20- x 20-cm and the crops were grown under normal agronomic practices. The experimental field was divided into three parts and each part was used as a replication. Each replication was divided into six plots each of 3- x 3-m size. The sampling was done at an interval of 15 days starting from the 15 OAT. The plots in a replication were marked at random for sampling on different dates. For each replication, the randomization was done afresh. At the beginning of the experiment, each plot of a replication was demarcated by sticks into sampling and harvest area leaving two lines as border. In the centre of each plot, an area of 2.5- x 2.5m was kept for harvest. The rest of the area around the harvest area was used for sampling. Samples were taken from the sampling area at each sampling date. Ten hills were randomly selected from the sampling area. Thus, 30 sample hills were taken at each sampling date and for each sample, following characters were measured-

Plant height,
Number of tillers, and
Number of green levels.

The selected hills were then cut at the root level, sun dried and weighed separately. The correlation coefficients (r) between plant characters and dry matter weight were significant at all growth stages, which increased with the age of plants

Achievement/Findings:

The r values between plant height and number of tillers were significant at 45 DAT and in latter growth stages. The r values between number of tillers and number of green leaves were also significant at all growth stages. These indicated the existence of multi collinear between independent variables. Results revealed that the number of tillers was the most important plant character prediction of dry matter weight after 30 DAT. Although, the r value was highly significant at all growth stages, its value was quite low before 45 DAT. At 45 DAT, the value of r was 0.78 which was higher than 95% at 60 DAT and remained so onward. Results clearly indicated that a linear regression of dry matter weight of rice plants on number of tillers would give an adequate predication model after 45 DAT. The estimated Iinear regression models of dry matter weight with number of tillers/hill (TN) and corresponding values of coefficient of determination (r²). The value of r² showed that at least 90% variation in dry matter weight per hill of rice plants could be explained by the number of tillers alone at 60 DAT or later. The values of r² were found significant at all growth stages. But, the values of r² were not appreciable before 45 DAT. From the results, it seems to be clear that the dry matter of the rice plants can be predicated as early as 60 DAT with reasonably high precision just by counting the number of tillers/hill from a random sample of 30 hills. T. Aman data is yet to be completed. It may be concluded that the dry matter weight of the rice plants at different growth stages can be predicted as early as 60 DAT with reasonably high precision based on number of tillers per hill. Further studies will be required for confirmation of the results.
