Effect of Education on Technology Adoption and Aggregate Crop Output in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study examined the contribution of education on regional technology adoption and aggregate crop output. The results indicated that education has a positive effect on the adoption of irrigation, biological (MV) and chemical fertilizer technology. Infra structural facilities (road) has significant positive impact on MV adoption. Higher the road availability per hectare of cropped area, higher the adoption of MV. The study reveals that to increase the technology adoption level as well as its utilization to the fullest extent, we need to expand agricultural knowledge oriented education system in the rural areas of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To examine the contribution of education on regional technology adoption and aggregate crop output.

Methodology:

Data: Region wise (greater district) agricultural output and input use data for the period 1961-62 to 1991-92 were gathered and constructed from different published and unpublished sources. Details of the data sources and data construction procedure is discussed in Deb (1995). Analytical Procedure Contribution of Rural Education to Technology Adoption Technology adoption of a region depends on multiple factors, suitable land, irrigation facilities, infrastructure facilities, extension services, farmers' education, availability of new technology, etc. Modern technologies available in Bangladesh agriculture can be classified as irrigation technology, biological (MV) technology, and chemical (fertilizer) technology. These technologies are complementary to each other and depends on multiple factors. Rural people are mostly engaged in agricultural activities. Therefore, we expect, as in economic literature, that increase in rural education increases the technology adoption. To determine the impact of rural education to the adoption of technology, both descriptive and econometric analysis are performed.Econometric analysis is done to support the descriptive statistical analysis. Econometric level of the farmer or rural people surrogates other factors which influence adoption behavior. Therefore, to outweigh the effect of other factors, we have done multivariate analysis. We used the "two limit probit" (tobit) model rather than the least square method to explain the extent of adoption in different regions of Bangladesh since the observed value of our dependent variable has a limited range (zero to one). We estimated the contribution of rural education to irrigation, MV and chemical fertilizer technology adoption.
