Design of a Metering Device for Upland Palay Seeder

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at the Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Philippines. Bangladesh has nearly 8 million of direct rice land amounting to one third of the total rice area. Almost all direct seeded lands are upland and seeds are sown by manual broadcasting during the months of April and May under dry condition. A seed metering device is designed which can reduce seed rate by timely sowing and proper placement of seeds at an optimum depth. The most suitable metering device for upland palay is metering device no. 5 which has a right angle shape of cell with a nylon twine as cut-off mechanism. But for this to perform efficiently the cut-off mechanism to be used is nylon twine but with a metal sheet to regulate the passage of palay seeds. This metering device also gives the least percentage of milling or broken grains and lower coefficient of variation.

Objectives:

To develop a metering device for upland palay seeder using VITA/IITA Injector Planter

Methodology:

To accomplish the objectives mentioned in the previous section the following experiments were conducted:

1. Evaluation of the working performance of the rolling injection planter metering device

2. Make some modifications on the cut-off mechanism in the device

3. Meter the seeds undamaged by the metering mechanism

Description of the Rolling Injection Planter

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture has developed a rolling injection plan planter to help the small farmers minimize the cost of planting. This is manually operated, by one man. The planter has five basic components namely; handle, seed hopper, metering roller, six injectors and a press wheel. The six injectors are installed on the periphery of two hexagonal plates through which seeds are placed in the soil. A press wheel squeezes some soil to cover the holes made by the injectors. Bach crop has specific metering roller with pre-determined rates. The planter makes holes at an average distance of 25 cm between hills.

Metering Device

It consists of the meter and the cut-off mechanism. Three types of wooden metering device were designed for this test. Except or the types and dimensions of the cells, the dimensions of the metering device are the same as that of the rolling injection planter. Three cells with different shapes were designed: right angle, rectangular, and circular. There were five different metering devices tested, two with right angle-shaped cells, two with rectangular cells, and one with circular cells.

The main concern of the study was the performance of the metering device, only laboratory testing was conducted. The hopper assembly of VITA/IITA Injection Planter was adapted. The number of seeds contained in the cell and the occurrence of milling were recorded and analyzed.

In the original design of the metering device of VITA/IITA injection planter, the rate of seeding of palay is high as compared to the required amount of 4 to 6 seeds per hill and there are occurrences of milling and broken grains. With these problems, modifications have to be made and this brought about to the design of the metering device for upland palay. Except for the types and dimensions of the cells, the dimensions and material used are the same. Three cells with different shapes were designed: right angle, rectangular, and circular. Based from the results the most suitable metering device for upland palay is metering device no. 5 with a right angle shape cell with a width of 8 mm, depth of 3mm and length of 20 mm. But for this to perform efficiently the cut-off mechanism to be used is nylon twine but with a metal sheet to regulate the passage of palay seeds. This metering device also gives the least percentage of milling or broken grains and lower coefficient of variation.
